I often think that a big company like Apple, especially Apple, should have an innovation department with limited, novel, collectors item product releases. Just like e.g. Coca Cola in Japan or tech companies in China. Apple should release novel, experimental products, in limited numbers (for example 100,000 pieces, or 2 million, whatever) every week or couple of months (whenever ready), like

- a 17" MacBook Pro
- or a MacBook Pro but with 3-4 extra ports
- or a MacBook Pro with touchscreen.
- Or a mini iPhone.

Or a black MacBook Air 2018. An Apple Pencil that works on Trackpads. A MacMini with a small, user serviceable battery. God knows what. They could do it!

They are innovating increasing profit on declining sales volume. Not the easiest of tasks.

or a $200 iPhone for India could be cool

I figures there is no way India could have all the latest and great for a mere $200 bucks, when Apple is all about you pay or quality and features.

If that were true, then Apple could bring down the price everywhere as well, which i don't think will happen.. At east not by this much of a difference. If Apple could sell a Retina phone in India for $200, then it Apple would be loosing money, while they have a problem with, otherwise they wouldn't be fighting to get "reasonable" priced phone in. "Reasonable" as in reasonable to Apple, not to India. unless its a pure basic phone.

- a 17" MacBook Pro

After nearly 13 years of MacBook Pros as my daily driver, I still think that the 2011 MBP 17" (matte) was the best laptop I have ever used. Give me that with updated internals, slightly lighter (no optical drive required), a good / bright matte 1920x1200 display, the old keyboard - and I'd buy in a heartbeat.

That's not how Apple operates.
They take an existing product and make it better, that's always been their M.O, from the Apple I, all the way to the Apple watch and ear pods. They didn't invent the MP3 player but they coupled a music player, ability to buy music with a MP3 player with a hard drive.
They did not invent the smart phone, there were smart phones out there well before Apple entered the market.
