Apple gave MacCentral some insight on Shake, no more Windows version !!!

On February 7, 2002, Apple acquired Nothing Real and its flagship product Shake -- a high-speed compositing software optimized for high resolution visual effects. At the time Apple took over Nothing Real, Shake ran on Irix, Linux and Windows, but that's about to change.

"In addition to Mac OS X, Apple will continue to develop, support and sell Shake on Irix and Linux through the end of 2003, but the upcoming Shake 2.5 will be the last version we release on Windows. "

Go Apple! You stick it to 'em!

...but damn, if M$ did this to us, we'd be fuming!

But the big thing is what will it cost? Its not a cheap software. If they can bring it down to the $1k level like FCP, that would be a big deal. And then it wouldn't be available to the PCs, even better. Got to like this.

i agree there duke. if this comes in at a really high price, that will be tough. i, selfishly, would love to be able to afford it. of course, i'm not a pro... yet. but i think it would make sense for it to be relatively affordable. especially with the recent intro of cinema tools as well as the dropping of maya's price drastically.

the combo of all these high high end apps, at not so high prices would be great..

does anyone know how/if shake compares to combustion? as far as quality, what it can do? etc...

I'm very excited about this. I'm assuming this is going to target the same people who use FCP and DVDSP and that it will hit at around the same price level.

Personally, I think Apple's software spearhead into the post side of film/vidoe has been/is being perfectly excicuted. I mean, the post industry almost exclusively uses Mac hardware, and now Apple is releaseing this software that has, IMO, unheard of bang for the buck... This is just too cool!

There may be legitimate commercial reasons for ending support for Windows in Shake - presumably the code base for the Linux, Irix and OS X versions will be similar, whereas the Windows one requires significant additional development work.

However, Apple purchasing a software company and months later ending Windows support does sound suspicious.

We all know that Microsoft has been known to participate in anti-competative business practices - but imagine if they ever got serious about this kind of battle with Apple - their pockets are a lot deeper if they ever went on a spending spree!

Sometimes I feel Apple should be a bit warmer to the Windows platform for their own sake. In order for a new app to be adopted as an industry standard, it needs to gain a critical mass of users. This is hard to achieve without access the the vast number of Windows users. Witness the battle between GoLive and Dreamweaver. GoLive was there first, and arguably with a better product than Dreamweaver at the time. But their Mac-only strategy prevented them from becoming the standard. When they finally released a Windows version, it was too late.

As Apple is increasingly moving into application development, platform support, and specifically Windows support becomes an increasingly important issue for them. It seems their strategy in software is to use it as a reason for people to buy their hardware. But as they develop and aquire such an impressive software lineup, this starts to look like the tail wagging the dog!

With Apple dropping Windows support for Shake, the idea of OS X on Intel looks less likely than ever!

Ooooh I can't wait to get my mits on Shake........ as much as I love Combustion, it'd be really nice to have something ultra hi-end for the mac....

Ooooooh, Eeeeeeeee!! Can't wait!!! :D :D :D

Hmm, I wonder what Adobe thinks of all this. Apple seems to be stealing their thunder and what does this do to their relationship? I'm pretty sure Shake is going to kick After Effects' butt so who's going to use it on the Apple platform?

shake vs combustion

Both are great programs, but combustion, (i think) got the axe, and v.2 is the last one to be released. That should decide a lot for you.

As for pricing, AE production bundle is a lot more than 1K$, so I think that apple can maintain shakes current price point and still sell. Besides, this isn't for your everyday hacks, and I don't think that people are going to buy it to just "try and do a little compositing" with their DV footage from the family BBQ. I don't see any need to reduce price. Shake was developed for power users who are willing to spend the money for a good product.

On a lighter note, all we need now is a port of RAT and an update of maya (4.5 please!), and macs will take over the entertainment industry!:D

Shake pricing

i found somethign interesting on nothing reals site. i was ready other news and was reading about the port to mac os x. this included pricing on the product, below i posted the paragraph which i explained.

Pricing and Availability
Shake on the Mac OS X will be available directly from Nothing Real through the Internet. The software will be priced at $9,900. Additional render-only network licenses will be available at $3,900. Shake will also available from the following international resellers: Filmtools (Germany), Intraware Australia Ltd., Ordigraphe (Montreal), Post-Logic (France), Spako Media (Korea), Tyrell Inc. (United Kingdom), Video Design Systems (Toronto), Video Progetti (Italy) and Visual Processing Japan

1k doesnt look like it, more like 10k. damn thats alot. hopefully apple will go through with that ishake program that someone posted pictures of.

That's not true - combustion is still around. Discreet canned the original engineers, but they kept the program and moved development to Canada. That sounded like a crappy thing to do - maybe it was cheaper over there? Gotta love NAFTA ;) Discreet sez they're going to continue development on combustion, it was another Discreet program called EDIT that will be discontinued.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkk

They can't get rid of Combustion........ That'd be bad..... hopefully it is just EDIT that Discreet will discontinue.......

As for Shake, it seems like it's aimed at really hi-end Discreet products such as Flame and Inferno...... All are very much above After Effects and it's capabilities...... I personally don't think it'll p*ss off adobe that much..... AE has it's uses, but is simply not in the same league with regards to this software.........

ijon, that's a press release from January 9, 2001, way before apple got them and when nothing real were talking about doing a mac version. it has all chaged now. it won't be $9900, but it isn't going to be a free iApp. it could be around $1000 to $2000.

Given Apple's track record, I would have to agree with this. Apple even touts that FCP is a $10,000 DVEditing Package for only $1000. It wouldn't make sense that they would have something that would cost so much. Apple wants to get everyone to use their systems and hardware. By pricing it at the FCP level, they'll sell many times the amount.

I bought FCP out of my own pocket and I don't regret it a second especially after using Premiere. I just hope we see something soon, say MWNY. That would be a great treat.:D

Your right!

I didn't notice that guys. Thanks for correcting me. I didn't think Apple would charge it for that much anyways. I guess we will have to see. I bet we see a release sometime this summer because they have already shown beta copies to numorous people
