okay, i did a quick search to see if this had been talked about before, but no luck.

i'm looking at getting a PowerMac G5 very soon. most likely used, or refurbished if i can find one. heck, i'd buy new, that's no problem, if i could somehow find somewhere really cheap. :p

so the question is - does Apple Australia sell refurbished Macs? i can't see the link on their Store site like there is one on the U.S. Store site.

also - are there any auctions in Aus where i could find a good deal? or any other places? where is the cheapest to buy new anyway?

i have found this site that lists lots of Mac auctions sites, so i will check all those out.

thanks for any help. :)

I don't think Apple Australia sells refurb machines. I know that certain resellers do though. Have a look at these websites:

Computers Now: http://www.compnow.com.au/
Next Byte: http://www.nextbyte.com.au/
New Wave Systems: http://www.newwavesystems.com.au/

I have seen refurb machines on all these sites in the past. In my experience, Computers Now have slightly better prices. New Wave can sometimes be a little expensive too, so check your prices against others first.

Hope this helps.

thanks for those links, now i remeber seeing the NextByte Firesale & clearance pages before. maybe if i get desprate i'll give them a call and try to beat them down on the price. :p

and i also wanted to ask, has anyone in Aus (or other place overseas, outside the U.S.) made a refurbished purchase from the U.S. Apple Store? those prices seem pretty good, i'm just wondering how that affects AppleCare (i'm thinking it would be a good idea to have AppleCare with a refurb) and how much postage that would cost. i'm thinking maybe a couple of hundred $$$ for postage, but still... would be an alright deal.

just don't say that i'd have to take it to the U.S. to get it repaired.

thank you very much surroundfan!!:D
that was just what i was looking for... and there's a store just there in James St, how did i never know about this? and it looks like they've got just what i want.

do you have anymore links to sites/stores that get the Apple refurbished hardware?

barneygumble - i'll be looking for a PowerMac G5. Dual 2GHz minimum, but i'd love a Quad G5, that's more of a stretch, but i'll be looking to see if i can find one for a good price

if i recall the warranties on powermacs are only valid in the country where you bought the computer, it's only laptops that have a global repair warranty....so, yes, you would have to take it to the U.S. to get it repaired

Exactly right Macky-Mac, the desktop Macs only have local warranties. iPods and laptops have international (roaming) versions of AppleCare though.

thanks, that's good to know. i'll keep it in mind.

but that's alright, the refurb prices i've found from Aus stores is lower than the reburb price from the U.S. store by a couple of hundred AU dollars. :D

also at that link from WhirlPool a few of those refurbished and used Apple stores listed don't even stock G5's?!! the best some had was a G4 PM Mirror Door 1.2GHz or something?
