There is a major problem with the latest mobile operating systems. Lollipop for android was a huge mess and still is to some. We all know the issues with iOS 9 and the previous iOS 8. The simple solution is to charge say $9.99 for each major iOS update.

It would squash most bugs and increase performance. People would be smarter about upgrading their devices. Apple could also increase their revenue.

How would charging make the software better? just because we pay a fee doesn't mean it will fix all the issues. Apple has enough money where they don't need to charge and can hire the best software engineers to fix these problems. Bugs happen, but i don't think charging a fee will eliminate problems with the operating system. If anything, QC has gone down since Jobs passed. He would have made sure things were near perfect before release. Cook is more of a business man and makes decisions to help shareholders. Just my 2 cents.

I understand you guys like things for free and apple already makes a whole ton of money. That being said there is a fundamental problem with free mobile updates in general. iOS and andriod OS years ago became "free" because they wanted to lock down apps for mobile devices. More users means more apps which makes more revenue for Apple and Google. We have come to a point now that mobile devices don't need apps which has switched the profit mode.

Why would Apple and Google want to keep producing new mobile operating systems for free? Even if they want to continue this path why would they care if it was stable, bug free, and have better performance?

Added: Profit mode meaning -> apps now need to be compatible with iOS and android. Android and iOS can care less if a new app showed up in the App Store or Google Play Store.

The reason they want it stable, bug free, and have better performance is because they want to retain and add users which is what creates revenue. Which wouldn't be primarily be gained by charging for the iOS or OS X.

People don't care about software they care about the new hardware, status symbol, and being with the crowd.

Added: To add some facts to the discussion about 60% of Apple users stated that IOS 9 is slower or very slow compared to their pervious iOS version

The same reason Microsoft does not really care about people pirating Windows: it locks people into their ecosystem. Apple also makes the hardware which it marks up in price several times over the production cost and Google makes money selling your data, like they always have.

Switched to profit mode? That has always been the case for Apple.

One could also argue it's to help prevent OS fragmentation like Android because Apple are not dropping support for devices that are a few years out of date.

People do care about user experience which is largely software. They don't need to add cost to iOS to propel them to make a good iOS.

Yeah fragmentation is a valid argument

It's not really about the money it's about people paying more attention to updating to the next iOS version. This small fee would get people to complain to Apple if something goes wrong. I would even say make the next major iOS update 10.0 fee like $4.99.

No there is plenty of hardware and software I've paid for from Apple and it hasn't improved my experience compared to free software. Lion wasn't magical and it cost $$.

yes it is about the money or else why would u think we need to PAY? huh? pay them with a cake?

people already scream their guts out over any & everything about ios, mind u its only a small amount of users, why? cause the majority are satisfied with ios. if ios is "so bad that we should pay to make updates better" why are u still using it then?

those days are gone, no paying for a bloody update apple has done the right thing & its not like they need to charge anyway as theyre loathing in money, pay pay pay we have enough fees milking us for the dumbest things in this society as it is

Remember for example antenna-gate and Jobs' suggested solution? Where was QC then? But of course some frames drops and settings appearance position in iOS9 are much worse, just because they are from Cook era.

It's very simple.

Apple wants everyone to be on the same OS version. Why? It's much easier and cheaper to provide tech support when everyone is running the same setup. Apple saves a lot of money this way and consumers win, because they update the software for free.

In theoretical-land, Apple could charge $9.99 for updates, seem petty, and piss off users that pay for something that doesn't work properly.

Charging for iOS updates wouldn't improve the situation, as they already dedicated a lot of attention to yearly software updates. The same attention would be given to these updates regardless of if they're charging or not. It's not like Apple would magically make perfect updates because they started making some extra money on the side....this is a multi-billion dollar company that relies on customer experience.

The simply need to stop chasing the me too products and features and FIX all the issues..
Same of OS X

It's a simple lack of quality and product integration testing.

Apple already charges a premium for its devices and you are already paying for the software and hardware.
You can't run ios on a non apple device, same with mac os, unlike Android where the software is free.

It does seem Apple's quality control is getting worse . I thought it was a rush of features to compete with Android, and ios 9 was going to fix that ,but it hasn't happened. Maybe ios is getting bloated ?

Do you realize that when you buy your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch at a crazy price you not only buy the product but you also buy the eco-system and the awesome frequent system updates, so no, making paid updates would be a complete scam.

I have no problems with IOS9 other than game center showing up all the time. I can't imagine why paying for the IOS software would make it any better - it is great today. And as stated you do pay for it - it is in the cost of a phone. Now paying for an app might make it better than a free one. However, I also can say an $29 app doesn't necessarily better than a .99 app.

I also wonder about all these people who said IOS9 is bad - is the IOS or the apps they are running.

You already "pay extra" to get those ios updates.

Can apple do better? Yes, it couldnt be any worse...

Ok so 60% of Apple users notice worse performance with ios9. I think you guys are just used to the failures of the recent iOS updates. Apple even said themselves they won't improve iOS 9 until there is more people using it which ages me smh. Maybe we have all become accustomed to glitches, slowdowns, and problems.

Added: Also many android devices cost the same amount as the iPad such as the Google Pixel C tablet and the Microsoft Surface 3 and Microsoft Surface 3 Pro

Well, they tried to fix wifi during some 8.3-4 updates but unfortunately many who hadnt any problem with wifi have now - including me. Wifi was working fine, now i have spinning or blinking wheel since then. And only way is to toggle it. After ios 9 pinch to close apps is crappy. Sometimes i need to pinch so many times the screen that i could do a sketch called "you are doing it wrong?"
