I had a very strange situation yesterday. I received a call that went to voicemail saying it was from Goldman Sachs and to call back about my Apple Card. I went to my Wallet and saw that my Apple Card said "Account Closed". I called the number from the Wallet support (which was the same as the one that called me) and it took them an hour plus to tell me someone called to close my account on February 14th and could provide no further detail. This was definitely not me.

My pushback to them was when I called, they sent me a text to my phone for 2FA. How could (why would??) someone call and close my account without Apple / Goldman Sachs authenticating them? Wasn't Apple saying their card was the most secure one in the market? I've had credit cards for over 20 years and never had a situation like this.

To top it off, the absolutely brutal customer service rep kept saying she didn't know how my account was closed but I can reapply in 30 days (must have said this 15 times). I assured her I would not be reopening an Apple Card. In my opinion, I think they had some kind of error on their end. Truly nothing else makes sense.

Has anyone ever heard of anything / experience anything like this with their Apple Card? Sorry for the long post. Very frustrated.

I saw "macrumors newbie" and was going to call ??; until I saw your registration date.

The less worrying problem here would be if they are simply incompetent and have screwed up.

However, if they didn't screw up it means that someone has access to receiving your texts.

I would really lean on them to escalate this to whatever management you can reach; and really push that unless they hurry up sorting this out, and explaining the cause to you, you have to call the police and report some sort of identity theft happening.

The reason why that police report could be important is if someone really is successfully impersonating you, as then the police report will show when you noticed it, and that you took reasonable precautions; that can get you out of being liable for at least some of the potential damage, and/or might make it easier to get compensation from your insurance.

Yeah it is a very strange, annoying situation. I haven't seen anything weird from an Apple ID perspective but I did change my password to be safe. On top of that, with two-factor authentication turned on, I don't know how someone really could gain access to anything (sorry I am not super technical)?

I wouldn't get off the phone with their customer service until they promised they would do further investigation. I will let you know what I hear back.

GS sucks for customer service big time and the way they operate the Apple Card is ridiculous as well. I haven't heard of this with the Apple Card specifically but it brings back memories from a "fraud" issue I had a few years back on my Citibank Credit Card. Citi cancelled my card without telling me due to a "potential fraudulent transaction" and reissued me another one, except they didn't tell me and I didn't know. I showed up to the register to try to pay and the card was blocked. So I went out and called them and they would give me zero details stating some privacy bs, just only that everything was transferred to my new card and I would receive it in 7-10 business days. Didn't offer an apology or anything, kinda acted like I was a thief in a way if that makes sense. So something could have happened like this and they are just playing dumb and not telling you.

What I meant about how they operate Apple Card, is I switched apple id's and I contacted their customer service before I closed down my old account. They were annoyed, like no one had ever tried to change contact information and since the Apple Card is tied directly to an iCloud account, they told me to close my account and then apply under the new name in 30 days, but that won't guarantee that I'll get approved. They refused to help me just transfer over under a new application or anything they just said to close my account and reapply in 30 days. They then gave me grief about closing the account even though I told the reason why I wanted to close it bc of their stupid procedures lol. so I closed it and then turned around the next day and applied under the new Apple ID and was approved instantly.

The problem with dealing with these people in customer service is that if u ask for a manager, you're likely just getting another rep who is "escalating" it to their buddy for help. I would try to run it up to management, but you may not be able to make it that far as they will cite "privacy" reasons. If I were in your shoes and u don't make it that far, I'd just not waste anymore time dealing with GS, they are the worst.

Same thing happened to me. I was approved for the card. 5 day’s later ordered the titanium card and a week later it was cancelled and closed. Apple nor GS could/would give me a definitive answer as to why. They just kept referencing the terms and conditions of the card and that I violated it. No idea why because I never even used the card between applying, approved, and it being closed. I tried to apply again but the card is stuck in my wallet. So I can only add the cancelled card back instead of a new Apple Card.

I just had something similar happen to me today. I applied for the card at the end of April was approved and got my physical card in the mail. I have used the card but I’ve mainly been using it for the cash back and paying it off. No bounced payments or anything then suddenly today o get an email saying they closed my account because I violated terms and conditions. I reached out via chat and phone. Guy on the phone said he could only see that the account was closed and not eligible for being reopened. Person in the iMessage chat said my account was being reviewed and I would receive the results and explanation after the review. Couldn’t tell me how long that takes or anything more. Very fishy since there’s been nothing wrong done on my end with the card. I could see if I had gone over the limit, had a bounced payment, or something of that nature but I’ve only been charging and paying it off/down. The messed up part is that closed accounts hurt your credit. I’m looking forward to seeing their explanation.

Watch "Coded Bias" - it's certainly possible that your accounts were indeed closed 'on purpose' based completely on an error on the part of flawed code now governing much of our lives. They aren't going to admit if this is the case.

Goldman Sachs has never been in the credit card business and it shows. Be thankful you haven't had to deal with fraudulent charges (yes, a "secure" card LOL). They are the worst.

This seems to be a fairly common occurrence. I had intended to put my teenager on my account as a AU or maybe even a co-owner but now this is giving me pause. Having a closed account on their “new” credit history would be quite a detriment.

Apple should have went with Amex for this card, Goldman Sachs customer service is terrible.
Apple is going to "partner" with who ever is the cheapest for Apple to do business with. GS was probably willing to try it out and be Apple's "bitch".

Don't put a teen on Apple Card, get them a traditional credit card from a reputable bank that has an actual customer service line.

I have my Apple Card, but I use my capital one card for mostly everything else since their app and support is great.

I fell for the marketing. The only reason I got an Apple Card was because they touted Apple Card Family as a great way to build credit history for your kids and help them manage their money. My mistake! I’ll put them on my other accounts instead.

Apple Card is great for me when I get gas, buy Apple products, etc, but it’s still limited compared to other CC companies, and the other CC companies have actual customer service compared to GS.

I have the Apple Card, but did not put my adult kids on it due to my daily purchases and installments.

Instead, I gave them AU cards from American Express (free Gold cards for Platinum member).

It's only for emergency use anyway....

Have you tried looking at your credit report, you can peek at it and see if you can find the reason it was closed on their end, that’s a direct comment when dealing with their customer support.

Like someone mentioned usually when they close and account it can be their screw up, they suspect fraud on their or your end.

Instead of wasting a hard pull on this I should’ve gotten the Chase sapphire preferred for 100k URs. I think it’s been 4 years since I last had one so I should be eligible. Argh!

On the plus side I’m earning 3% on my $0.99 iCloud storage bill each month ?

Just wondering if you heard anything back yet ? I had similar thing happen to me today. Ive had my apple card for like 2 months now, been using it and paying it off before the due date and used it last night for an online purchase. I check my apple card today on my iphone and it says account closed and to contact customer support if i need additonal info. I call them and get told it was closed for a fraudulent reason but they couldnt tell me any details. I end up speaking to a manager and they tell me they dont know why and that i will get a call after the invesitgation which makes no sense because there has been no fraudulent activity on my card. Beyond irritated since it will hurt my credit.

Yes I'm so glad I rarely need support. They still haven't fixed the weirdness with the zip code. Some merchants will only accept our old zip and some the new. And I can't find anywhere else in the system to change the zip to the new one. At least worst case I just use the old zip, but it's so annoying, especially since they are so clueless

To quote Matt Taibbi's 2009 article on Goldman Sachs in Rolling Stone: "The first thing you need to know about Goldman Sachs is that it's everywhere. The world's most powerful investment bank is a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money."

Of course, GS is a shadow of itself from its glory days. Back in 2009, they would've laughed at the idea of going retail.

You'd think after several years of apple cards being closed without authorization, they'd implement a 2FA system by 2024. It should be equally hard to close an account as it is to open an account. I had my identity stolen and they closed my account so they can try to open a new one. Fortunately, they were unsuccessful opening a new account but unfortunately they successfully closed my old account. I received an email that my account was closed so I reached out immediately but it was already too late. Even if you reach out within minutes of an account being closed, they cannot re-open the account. Are you kidding me? So 6 years of purchasing history just vanish in a matter of minutes. Their solution is to reapply for a new card which is an easy way out for them but when your new card only has 8% of the credit limit your other card had 2 hours ago something is not right. I think it's total BS that they don't take the time to look at my perfect history for the past 6 years vs the rating the credit bureaus are spitting out at the moment due to the identity theft I'm facing. They say they'll take my feed back seriously but when a simple google search shows that this has been happening for years, you realize their words are just part of a playbook to try and appease the customer. You'd think two titans at the pinnacle of their respective industries, claiming to provide the most secure card in the industry could figure out 2FA like my local no-name regional bank has.
