Apple card "Payment not accepted"?

I was all looking forward to trying my new Apple Card today but the terminal at the supermarket said "Payment not accepted". I ended up paying with my other card (Chase Visa with Apple Pay as well), which went through.

Does it take some time for the Apple Card to "really" be activated? I applied and got the card this morning; it says "Ready to use" in the wallet app, but I figure maybe something isn't ready yet? It didn't even even give me a checkmark; the terminal just rejected it outright.

Nope, once activated in your wallet it should be ready to go.

This sounds like a problem I used to have with Discovercard: Some websites refused the card but Discover claimed they were never even contacted for an Auth.

Reach out to Goldman Sachs and speak to them.

Physical card or Pay? What store? For example, Costco will not accept the AppleCard because it uses the MasterCard network, and Costco only takes VISA and debit cards. Could be something like that... once you get the card issued, it should be active.

It should ping your phone right away if it wasn't accepted and let you verify the purchase. If not, then it's their side - like Tiggr and dwfaust said --- either the vendor doesn't support it or just their side.

I had a restaurant that could never charge this one Chase CC I had. Any other CC worked and I'd use that Chase CC to fill up gas right before, but no matter what (6+ months) I'd try to use my Chase CC and it would never work.

That's why I always carry at least 2 CCs and my debit.

One store around here won't take Mastercard, including Apple Card, on their contactless terminal, but Visa works fine. Terminal misconfiguration and lack of testing, go try somewhere else.

I had a restaurant that could never charge this one Chase CC I had. Any other CC worked and I'd use that Chase CC to fill up gas right before, but no matter what (6+ months) I'd try to use my Chase CC and it would never work.

You made me remember that there was this one chain which consistently rejected my Chase card. I called Chase to complain and the support tickets and subsequent complaint tickets (about the lack of response) disappeared into a black hole. One reason why I dumped them.

Apple Card using my iPhone digital wallet has never been an issue at POS terminals - except for using food apps such as Burger King, Jersey Mike, Panera, etc....

The liquor store at the end of the street had a temporary problem with CapitalOne cards. The store owner even taped a little note to the POS terminal warning customers in advance. Eventually the problem was resolved and the note disappeared.

I had an online account with a pay-as-you-go MVNO cellular company that couldn't handle credit cards with a CVV that began with a zero. They eventually resolved the issue but for a while I had to switch to a different card.

There are periodic idiosyncrasies with credit card transaction processing which don't make any sense to the consumer. Plus credit card processing services require an Internet connection. A couple months ago, the same liquor store was unable to take all credit cards due to an Internet service outage. I paid cash for my beer that day.

Up until fairly recently one drugstore chain (CVS) would not accept Apple Pay while their biggest competitor (Walgreens) did.

Like BigMcGuire said it still makes sense to keep a couple of credit cards in your wallet as well as a debit card. I always keep some cash around as well. I can't be bothered to keep track of every single retailer who accepts Apple Pay and those who don't. Just keep some plastic and Federal Reserve notes in your wallet.
