Yes, apple will offer it and yes its almost a requirement.

Hmm...you're right, I could do that as well. But then if/when something happens, you would need to try to explain to AmEx what the issue is (unless the device just flat out dies). Have you dealt with them before with something of a similar nature?
You submit a claim online, send the unit in, they either fix it or reimburse you. I've never had to do it fortunately.
Looks to be $99 for two years. Makes sense. I'll wait a year and make sure I don't break it first!
