I've heard people wanting to get something called APPLECARE for their 3GS, and I have heard of others stating Squaretrade insurance is the way to go.
Are they similar, different, opinions, recommendations?

squaretrade offers accidental damage protection in addition to breakdown issues.

I just called squaretrade and they said that they'll have the data for 3gs within the next couple days on their website.

i believe squaretrade is TRUE insurance that will replace lost or stolen....apple care doesnt really cover anything extra within the first year.....its kind of a ripoff, actually :apple::apple:

Thanks everyone.
I was leaning towards Squaretrade, hoping their costs were similar to the 3G cost.

Yep. I emailed them and got this:

"Thank you for contacting SquareTrade.

I appreciate your interest in the SquareTrade Care plan.

Since Apple will be launching the new iPhone 3GS, SquareTrade will soon be releasing the packages for these iPhones.

Furthermore, this new coverage will be available before the release of the iPhones, and for that you may need to check our website periodically. "

if you buy it from bestbuy and buy their black tie protection (warranty) it also covers against accidental damage etc. it's a monthly plan for like $12 or so.

Good luck.

AppleCare extends your warranty, unlike SquareTrade which is an insurance company. AppleCare is not insurance. Ideally you would have both services, as they are complimentary.

One thing to note is that AppleCare is more than a warranty service. You can call them at any time about anything and they will be happy to answer your questions. So if you need technical assistance, AppleCare is nice for that too, not just if something breaks.

wow square trade is way better then apple care. So if my phone is getting scratched or cracking of case i just accidentally drop it and break the screen and get a complete new iphone for free? (after the 96 dollars for 2 yrs)

Sounds to me like SqureTrade is the way to go. I have never used them before, but plan to once my 3G S comes in.

You need to pay a $50 deductible for accidental damage replacement. But after that, I assume the insurance is gone. I don't think (I may be wrong) they will cover break after break after break for $96 + $50 an incident.

so if its not an accident i dont pay anything? 50 dollars is better then apples 200 dollar repair.

Thats a bad deal 12X24= $288 Applecare is about $70

Square trade will not replace lost or stolen iPhones but they do everything else including water damage. They generally give pretty good deals too. My 3G is insured for 2 years for only $54.

SquareTrade is NOT insurance.

I like SquareTrade because they'll cover you if the phone goes through the washer/gets water damage, but they do not cover you for lost or stolen.

I just learned this first hand.

Does square trade replace your iphone or do you just get the early-upgrade value as cash?

I am interested in the plan for the 32gb iPhone. Its around 100 dollars, but I did early upgrade pricing and paid 499 for my phone. I won't be eligible for another early upgrade for at least a few more months. My question is what happens if my phone succumbs to accidental damage in the mean time? Will square trade replace my phone with a new 32 gb iPhone or simply give me 499 to buy a new 32 gb iphone?

I had a Square Trade policy on my 16gb 3g. I spilled a root beer on it, which toasted the phone. I had it insured for $500.00. Sent the phone to Square Trade, and received a check for $450.00 ($50.00 damage deductible).

In my experience, they have been very responsive and reputable.

just found this thread and my first 30 days is coming to an end and i was wondering if i should get applecare for 69 or squaretrade which is 115 for 2 years for 32gb 3gs .. this is the first time ive heard of squaretrade

so squaretrade will just give you a check for you to buy a new iphone ?? wont issue a replacement ??

Just so you know, you can get AppleCare anytime before your 1st year is up. Not so sure about SquareTrade, I do know they send you a check.

However I don't think SquareTrade will completely cover the $599/$699 for a new iPhone. If you break it, Apple can replace it for $199. Just be sure to look at all of the numbers.

Good Luck.

Just to be sure, if I get Square Trade, I'll get a check that will cover a new phone? Will Apple Care do the same thing?

TIA

squaretrade says you need to buy it within 30 days of getting the iphone .. and the main difference is squaretrade covers accidental while apple does not ..
dunno what to do ..

applecare will not do that .. from what ive read you can get a replacement iphone from applecare for 199

squaretrade .. according to their website .. gives you a check for like 90% of the cost of the phone .. but you must send them your phone first

Get Applecare

Wow ... ATT doesn't seem to offer anything as to insurance.

How much will SQUARETRADE pay you for breaking your iPhone ????

This much .....
http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/iphone-landing19

IPHONES BREAK: We cover drops, spills and battery failures. Get cash back if iPhone can't be fixed (up to $299/$399/$499 for 8/16/32GB).

Break your 32 GB iPhone and they give you $499 ?????

Is that enough to cover replacement purchase from Apple ???
