I bought my new Imac less than a couple weeks ago, seems as if the mouse scroll button has already broken. When scrolling down, left, or right I can hear it clicking and it scrolls fine. But when I try and scroll up it sounds smooth as if it isn't making contact with anything, and obviously it will not scroll up.

So, do you guys think Apple would replace my mouse if I went to their store or called them?

if you bought your computer from the apple store online, i'm not sure if the apple store will be able to replace it, in which case you'd have to send it back to apple and have them send you a new one... i say you might, because the mouse is not serialized with your iMac, so they may be able to do an exchange at the store even if you ordered it online.

to answer your question - yes they will replace it (or try to clean it). the mouse is covered under warranty too... even if you don't have apple care, the first year warranty covers the mouse.

i suggest that if you live far from the apple store you should try to clean it yourself, and if it works you've saved yourself a trip to the apple store. but if you do manage to clean/fix it don't expect it to last much longer - the mighty mouse scroll ball is an inaccessible dirt trap, and *WILL* eventually stop working.
 
Is two years long enough? Guess which mouse I used to scroll down to your post. I use my iMac an average of three hours per day, every day. I've had to fix the scroll ball five times in two years. Just because you got the shaft (and a faulty ball) doesn't mean that they all suck.
 
I don't mind the Apple Mouse, but after several instances of the scroll ball getting dirty and not working, I gave it up, tossed the thing in a drawer and hooked up my good old Logitech. No drivers required, just plug and play.
 
Eat with one hand, mouse with the other

If you tend to eat while mousing or use it with dirty hands you will note with increased frequency that the scroll ball locks up. So far upside down rolling on a clean cloth or towel has fixed it for me. Another issue is the right click not being recognized. Both issues are well known.
 
urgh... I've had mine for nearly two years and it now wont scroll up. I've tried cleaning it.. everything. Any other ideas than those suggested?

Also, I have AppleCare on the MacPro which it's off, if I go to the store would they change it? Not have a mouse scroll up is annoying.

Only reason I'm asking is because I'm heading near an Apple Store tomorrow.

EDIT:

Well, I tried the paper rub again, it works. it makes a 'louder' click noise now going up, but still.. its working.
