Apple Care

I'm planning on buying the new imac at launch, or the old imac, either way within the next week or so. My question is whether apple care is worthwhile. I am very comfortable with pc's and fixing hardware or software but know NOTHING about the mac. I also know nothing about hardware failures or how expensive it is to fix.

What are people's suggestions on apple care or not to apple care?

IMO it's worth it. If it needs repair after warranty, it'll cost more than Apple Care, usually a lot more. Remember that you can buy it within a year after purchase, no need to buy it immediately.

Does the apple care work at local stores or do i have to send in my computer? i went into a local maclife store and they were selling me hard on buying from them based on them being able to do work on it, but i couldn't if i went through the online purchase. the only reason i'd go online is that i can get a education discount.

If the store is authorized reseller which has authorized repair as well, then it should repair your Mac if it needs it, no matter where you bought it. I think the reseller gives you edu discount as well, call them and ask about both things

They can't do repairs anyway unless they're authorized to, and if they're authorized to they will do repairs on all macs, no matter where you buy it.

Yeah, Apple Care is worth its money. Also means your peace of mind, because you don't need to worry about your Mac crashing!

a salesman in the maclife store when i asked if they could match apple's online education discount. he said no, but that it was better for me to buy it from him b/c they can offer support. none of that made sense to me.

You might as well use that timeframe to your advantage in case you get rid of the computer for some reason or if it craps out on you (very unlikely, but always possible). And when the time comes to buy Applecare, you can find it much cheaper from a reputable eBay seller.

Does the warranty start from the time that you buy it? Is that why you want to buy it at the 11mth mark? Does it have a 1yr warranty that would cover any issues up to that point?

AppleCare extends the limited warranty to 3 years (so adding an additional 2 years) and starts on the day you purchased your computer and NOT when AppleCare is purchased.
