Apple Complimentary Care Transfer - Will they fix my Crackbook?

Hi guys,

What a great community you guys have here! I try to do searches before I jump in and ask questions, but I can't seem to find an answer to my question.

I just bought a macbook from a user on another forum, for a decent price I think:

2.0gHz Core duo
160gb hdd
2gb Ram
Superdrive, and all the goodies
for $875

The macbook is in great condition aside from the common crack found on the lower right hand edge of the palm rest. I read that some people were able to get their macbooks repaired, but was just wondering if there will be a problem with me getting repair done under the warranty since I am a second buyer.

Do I need to have him transfer the Serial number to my name or something? Or can I just call up with the Macbook serial number and request warranty repair. The Macbook was originally purchased Nov of 2006. Thanks guys, I appreciate the help...apple newbie here...

I think usually, you're fine as long as you have documentation of sale. But most importantly, you want to register the issue with Apple ASAP, because your warranty is so close to expiring. So call them as soon as you can. Good luck!

Thanks mkrishnan. I will definitely do so, as soon as I receive the computer (it is being sent over at the moment). All documentation of the sale is through emails and paypal, as it was an internet purchase. I hope that is enough for them.

I also hope they won't give me a hard time with the nature of the crack. I am sure it is not physical damage because there are scores and scores of users here who reported the same problem. Their results were mixed...I think towards the beginning apple did not recognize the crack due to manufacturing error. Towards the end however, I read a few people were able to get their macbooks repaired. Of course - it seems that there is a huge decline in posts regarding resolutions to the problem - hence I wonder...

Yes I am thinking about doing that. Can you purchase the warranty after the complimentary period? I hope so.

I will read the apple care coverage details haha but if you guys can answer, that would be awesome.

Yes I definitely think I will now. Is applecare coverage worth it? I guess the general consensus here is that you should always purchase the applecare along with your macbook...but my macbook is the older version...and I always upgrade. Haha. Oh well, I will get it, maybe while I tell them about my cracked macbook. Maybe they will make my life easy and accept the macbook for warranty repair right away.

For laptops, definitely.

Thinking about the innards of that Macbook, there are maybe 3 parts that can fail and cost under the $250 you'll spend to get Applecare. (I think it's $175 if you're a student)

I am really proficient when it comes to opening up laptops for repair (worked for Sony and Asus as repair tech). But a 3 year warranty is good for $183 which I see on the site for students. All I want is for the crack to be fixed...haha the notebook was purchased secondhand but is perfect otherwise. A new topcase will make the computer brand new for me!

UPDATE:

I was EASILY able to change the registration of the serial number for the macbook I bought second hand from the old owner to me....so yay for that.

Also was able to EASILY purchase AppleCare Protection plan with higher education discount. They said the normal price is $249...I got for $183. Didn't even ask for proof. Fantastic!

Now all I need is to receive the notebook and call in regarding the crack issue. If they fix that for me no questions asked....I am officially an Apple convert for life.

You transferred the SN and purchased applecare for a computer you don't even have possession of?!? I guess you really trust the person you bought it from...

Yup, original owner is a friend. He needed to save all his data before doing a system restore...got the macbook in immaculate condition aside from the common crack.


Update: Was able to call in and have my cracked palmrest fixed under apple care warranty. Very easy, and they didn't give me any trouble. It is in transit back to me form apple, and once I receive, going to upgrade more.
