At some point Apple computers as we know them now, will be but a memory. Pushing their "Post PC" Era on us this soon, indicates Apples burning desire to phase out full blown computers that fail to bring in the massive profits of iToyz.

Apple got to be the richest of all, by putting profits over everything else. Having achieved the magic combination for generating more cash than any other American corporation, there's no looking back now.

Until you can make iOS apps on an iPad or iPhone. (Or PC) They need to make Macs, they only dropped the "Computers" from their name because they aren't purely about computers, they diversified. They won't drop Macs entirely. I doubt they ever will.

What about those rumors about dropping the entire Pro line? I highly doubt Apple will still make towers or even iMacs in the future. The way I see it, they would keep MacBook Airs along with iPads and throw some kind of iOS-like OS on it.

Why close scope again? The reason for removing the Computer part from Apple was so they could be better placed with consumer electronics.

Why be so tied to the traditional concept of a Desktop metaphor computer? You never know, iOS 8 or 9 could introduce a whole new way of coding for iOS using iOS.

If the day comes when computers are no longer profitable, then I'm sure Apple will quit making them. But they still make a profit on their Macs. It's not as big as their profit from iOS devices, but it's not insignificant, either.

Apple might be dropping the Pro Line because they're mostly about the consumers now.

I expect iOS to move to the Macbooks. The Pro Line will be discontinued since development of OSX is too expensive and won't bring enough money in the door (at least not in comparison with iOS devices). They didn't even get 10bit color support done in OS X.
Generally, commercial computing is moving to special purpose computing. Sandboxing everywhere, App Stores which are handled by your system manufacturer, EFI keeping the average user from installing another operating system. It will be the same for Windows, basically.

Is there anything wrong with caring about profits? Is there anything wrong with putting resources behind the most profitable product lines?

No, but to withdraw money from product lines that made a company's name is weird. Apple made all their marketing by tarketing audio/video pros and schools (for the past 15 years or so?...), now they they give those same people the middle finger. Thats not cool at all.

Hanging onto businesses that make little to no money is a great way to put a company out of business. It's irrelevant how the Apple of the past made their money. Heck, the "original" Apple made their money by selling to hobbyists. As soon as they figured out how to reach past that initial market, Apple dumped all over the hobbyist.

Yes, Apple has/had a following in the AV Pro market. The truth is that this market is becoming increasingly less profitable. Apple needs to move onto bigger and better markets.

Those rumors are speculation. They could come true, but it would have nothing to do with the rumors. They're not based on credible information, so they're meaningless to the eventual outcome. Rumors suggested Apple would kill the mini years ago. A recent rumor suggested a switch to NVidia, then another rumor suggested that they decided against it once AMD drivers started to show up in Mountain Lion builds . I just wouldn't lend any real credibility to the rumor beyond the discussions on the mac pro's future that could take place without the rumors.

If you really do see a merger of the two, it's not likely to be what you think of as IOS or OSX today. Lack of 10 bit color support annoys me immensely, as it does seem to help with shadow values toward the bottom of the range.

No, you still need a Mac to develop for those devices.

You need a Mac to publish iOS apps to the store. The limitations are political.

No. It's not going to happen.

What you will see is a continuation of the model in which the PC is "just another device." As iOS devices become more powerful, more capable, it won't matter what device you're using because all your data will be on all your devices. Your media, documents, calendars, contacts, messages, app data will seamlessly sync among all of them. That's what iCloud is about.

Anyone who's been paying attention the last few years can see where this is going. It's like Steve said in 2010: PCs will be like trucks. They will still be around, and they'll still serve a purpose; but fewer people will be using them.

I'm not saying it's a perfect model, but like it or not that is the model Apple is following. Computers aren't going anywhere.

Quite agree with you! More and more people become liking Mac. I am sure they will not quit making them at present.

At present, Apple will not stop producing computers, I think. Mac is a kind of new product, new system in nowadays! I nerver heard of that a company stops producing new products. But in the future, Apple will definitely stop producing computers. No keyboard at that time, jsut like rope phone will disappearing in the future.

Even if Apple do end up killing their computer product line, why would they want to limit their future endeavor's to just 'mobile' devices? Not having a product in their company name allows more freedom of what they can do.

Why do you think McDonald's Hamburgers was just renamed to McDonald's?
