I am trying to figure out how Contacts works in a situation I just encountered. My wife has several doctors all contacted with the same hospital, and I have dutifully entered each doctor into Contacts. The hospital has gravitated to a phone system where there is one number that one calls for all scheduling, and that is also the number that patients must call to contact any doctor at that hospital. Somehow, and I don't know how, outgoing calls from that hospital also goes through one number irrespective of the doctor doing the calling. Because of how I entered the doctors, today we received a call from the pulmonologist but it was announced by the iPhone/Contacts as being from the gynecologist! I have two questions:

What does Contacts do with an incoming call when that number is listed for two or more individual contacts?

Is the best solution to go through our Contacts, de-list all the doctors and specialists, and make just one contact for the entire hospital?

Make one listing for the hospital. If receiving an incoming call you will at least know if is from one of the doctors' offices. Keep the individual doctors in your contacts with their specific numbers. With my medical team I face the same issue, but, over time, I have learned which extension is for which section and use it to make my outgoing calls to them; saves time.

Thank you! I did at least start to do what you suggest, but the hospital does not give out the doctor-specific numbers; everything goes through scheduling, it seems. And I can't get sneaky because the number the phone provides after the call is a number that can't be dialed in to. So now I have xxx-xxx-xxx1 down for both the hospital, for the OBGYN, and for the hematologist. What will show up as the caller when anyone one, but just one of them calls?
