This is a long story.

I recently purchased a new iMac 27" with an i7 processor. Shortly afterwards I also purchased a refurbished Apple 24'' LED cinema display for my Mac Pro. The iMac apparently had a defective superdrive (took me couple of weeks to realize it) while the display came in with three green and two magenta lines going from top to bottom that was noticeable from the start.

Needled to say I took both in for repair at a local Apple store in So Cal.
They ordered a new screen for the LED display and a superdrive for the iMac.

Two weeks later I was told the display apparently needed not just a new panel but a new logic board too.
And the iMac apparently slipped the hands of a technician and on to the floor

Since the 24" LED is no longer made they offered me a new 27" LED in exchange :)

I've also been offered a new iMac 27" (custom configured like mine) in exchange for my damaged, yet working fine, iMac.

I do have one question. Is it possible I can purchase, or better yet, pick up the iMac free from them?

I also watched a customer come into an apple store with his non functioning iphone4 the genius checked it and said sorry we can't do anything because the moisture strip was red. The man told his story of how it was just in his shirt pocket while working outside so it may have gotten damp from the sweat and he seemed honest about it. The genius asked to see the phone again, turned it facedown and dropped it onto the floor. She picked it up and said hmmm I see some physical damage to the case, looks like you need a new phone, here let me get you a new one. The man was on his way with a new phone within a few minutes. With a large :)

Keep the customer happy

I dont know about getting it free....only because they upgraded your machine they broke right?

Maybe I'm missing something but your question seems incredibly unethical. You are saying they replaced a 24" screen with a new 27" under warranty and then they damaged your iMac and are offering you a new replacement and you are asking for more?

Same confusion here. You get a brand spanking new 27" (which it not what you paid for) and a new 27'' iMac. So, what's the problem?

They will not give you the old, broken merchandise back.

As far as the iPhone story, that's hard to digest. Of of the biggest reasons warranty service is declined by Apple is because of damage. And Applecare does not cover damage at all. If true, good for the customer, but I don't know what the employee was going to do as she invalidated a warranty that had already been invalidated.

saw this on another site

"The only explanation for this seems to be that if an Apple Store employee damages your phone by accident, Apple is liable to replace it for you. So it wasn’t damaged when the customer brought it in (the water things were intact, and the outside undamaged), but he couldn’t be made to leave with a visibly broken iPhone. In this case that accident was a little less of an accident, but that was a necessary step for the Genius to be able to issue a new piece."

Not claiming this IS how Apple works, if it's ethical, whatever. Just discussing an observation I had while getting my nephew a laptop.

You can upgrade the iMac, but it would be at an extra cost to you. Apple won't add-in any upgrades as a form of compensation as they have already replaced both products that were faulty.
