Apple deleted my music

I went on to the Music app on my phone to look for an album I had purchased years ago—the Star Wars soundtrack for The Empire Strikes back. I’m scrolling through the albums in my “purchased” library and there is the album, but once I click it there are only two tracks listed out of the entire album. So, I do a bit of research and go onto iTunes to search for the album and see how it comes up there. Low and behold, the album is gone, not sold on iTunes anymore, and it’s been replaced by some re-recorded version not anywhere near as good as the original. I also notice that this has happened for all of the “Star Wars” movie soundtracks, the albums I bought years ago are no longer on the store and all of the tracks have been erased from my library, occasionally one or two replaced by a crappy re-recording. How can Apple rescind music that I purchased and OWNED just because the record company decided to stop listing it on the store?

I didn’t “back it up” per se, I bought it on iTunes which I thought meant I could always go to “purchased” and stream or download it

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of folks thought the same as you did and lost their music or apps that are no longer available from the Apple iTunes store. By the way, I had that same Star Wars soundtrack on cassette tape. I'm telling my age.

It's more convenient but with digital copies you are only really paying for access to the content. You don't really own it so it can be removed at anytime. I have all my music backed up and my ebooks but movies and TV shows, there are too many and I don't have the storage space to back it all up.

And thats why I stay the heck away from streaming/cloud services. At any moment the content I think I own could be altered or removed without warning.

I actually bought the New Hope soundtrack a long while back (already had CDs for Empire and Jedi) and it appears to still be on my iPod touch's Music app cloud storage.

I was the same as you and didn't sign up for Apple music until last year. However I have my music backed up on an external drive so it's safe.

You guys are lucky, maybe you can send it to me haha. The new albums they’re sending are nowhere near as good, I can’t understand why they did that.

Have to say I find that extremely misleading. It’s like buying a car, and then one day the car disappears from my driveway, and the company says “oh we stopped selling that model so now it’s gone.” Makes 0 sense.

Yeah that really stinks. I've never bought and downloaded anything from Apple Music though. I only use the streaming feature.

Have you looked in desktop iTunes > Account > Purchased > Music?
