Apple doesn't track lost/stolen ipods/iphones?

I reciently discovered this with if you lost your ipod, whether your warrenty is with apple or not, and I am not sure if you guys know this already but don't you find it weird that apple doesn't try to recover lost or stolen ipods?

Like really if apple did it, they could of done it in many ways, like an apple database on all the apple products in the world and if someone says it is stolen there is a chip saying right where it is. Or maybe locking the ipod if it is connected to the computer or detecting where it is when it gets plugged in, and really it makes no sense why they would not do any of this when they could really help. Ther eis the police but they really aren't a help unless the crime is major.

Conceivably it could be done via iTunes (iTunes would check the ID of the iPod during every snyc), but what would it accomplish? Apple wouldn't be able to find the iPod for you, and the thief who stole it from you is likely not the person using it.

In cases of small losses (and yes, losing an iPod is still a relatively small loss), it's best to forget and move on.

In the title you state iPhones,

Apple do not track your iPhone however who ever your provider is <b>will</b>. From that they can block the stolen phone so that the user can't use that phone again unless they use it abroad. Only possible way to bypass their block is to change the EMEI number which is close to impossible I gather!

They should step up and follow the example set by Dell, GE, GM, Toyota, Sony and just about every other manufacturer of consumer goods when it comes to tracking stolen items.

Actually, having itunes as a tracking mechanism might be good, if it can be activated by user (but how can someone claim to be the true owner?), but of course privacy advocates would have a field day in making it an issue.

The fact still remains... Why?

If you lost your iPod/iPhone isn't it your fault? Tracking an iPhone/iPod would take a lot of resources, and like it was stated earlier, it's a meager loss.

True, it is possible to LoJack the iPod Touch and iPhone, but the other iPods, it's not worth it.

Now having it stolen, you just go to the cops and tell them the description of whoever. If someone from a who stole the iPod was apart of the cleaning service, let the company know.
