I was comparing prices for a new BTO iMac on the online education store (including tax) and at B&H (no state tax).
The prices are basically the same.

I started a dummy order on the education store site and made it to check out and no information was asked that would determine if I qualify for the discount.

How do Apple know that I am a student or a teacher?

I just received a new iMac for my daughter today. She is a university student, so I ordered the iMac on 3/22 through the Apple Education store, as a parent. I was never asked to verify my status for the $200 education discount.

Congratulations to your daughter! She's got a good dad.

I qualify for the discount and when I've used it at the Apple store they have asked for the name of my institution but haven't required proof so I expected the web site to ask ... the discount pretty much wipes out the amount of the tax. I'm surprised more people don't go down this road.

Thanks! I’m sure she will be thrilled when we give it to her tomorrow evening. Although no status verification was requested, I did have a copy of her student ID and this semester’s registration form, if needed.

I bought my 2017 iMac via the educational store and although there was no verification at the time, I did have to upload my student card photo ID a week or two later, via a request from Apple. I believe failing to do so would have meant me having to pay up the discount.....

Over the years, I don’t think I have ever been asked to verify educational status when purchasing through the Apple Education Store, both online or in-store. In the past, you to selected your school, but I think even that is gone now. I am faculty at the local university and have kids in primary and secondary schools, so it’s not an issue for me, but I really think it’s just on your honor.

I believe that's the case as well. I'm also a faculty member at a local university, and as it happens, I've bought quite a few Apple items over the last year. Normally, if I buy online, I'm never asked, but if I'm in the store, they ask to see my ID. A couple of months ago, I was in the Apple store picking up an order, and I offered to show them my faculty ID. They said that since I paid online, it wasn't necessary.

When I bought a laptop for my son in college at the apple store they would not give me the discount unless he was present . A copy of the ID or even the actual ID would not do. It had to be him with the ID. Now I just order online. No questions asked.

FYI: the Apple Veterans and Military store has prices a bit better than the Education Store.

Those who served in military (for any amount of time) are authorized to use the store. Link is at bottom right of Apple home page.

In the beginning I remember having having to verify student status, too. More recently, as others have noted, that wasn't needed. I assumed it was some sort of screening based on whether you were using a .edu email address, but maybe they've really switched over to an honor system.

EDU pricing is rarely as good as the Refurb Store but you can buy AppleCare through the EDU store and apply it to refurbs. The first time I did that, the online store wouldn't let me so I called Apple and the gal took the order. Now it's easy.

Interesting thread. Apple lost a recent lawsuit in California State Supreme Court over the Student ID issue in the stores.

We have identity theft laws. A retail employee can ask to see your photo ID if paying by credit card but it's against the law to write the number down. So, student ID wasn't the real issue so much as the fact that the stores were making copies.

It's not well publicized—would I have known had I not had a job behind a retail counter when it took effect in 1985? Blockbuster wanted to make a copy of my CA drivers license and credit card in 2003 or so. "But it's company policy..." whined the manager. I filed a complaint with the Dept. of Consumer Affairs and Blockbuster was sent a cease and desist letter as a result. They never saw my driver's license as you can imagine.

Then there's this. It's a pilot program now but what about in a few years?

Anyway, I have a daughter still in school. I buy online with no problems.

One of the really cool things about the EDU store is Pro Apps Bundle for Education: $199.99 includes Final Cut Pro X, Logic Pro X, Motion 5, Compressor 4, and MainStage 3.

The way it works is you make the purchase. Apple then emails the five codes. You then log into your App Store account and punch in each code for the app(s) you want — there's a field for the code. They will download already registered to your Apple ID.

Any of the apps you don't need, you can give away by emailing your unused redemption code to someone else. He/she can log into their account and do the same. I already had Main Stage when I did that but my music teacher daughter did not. I spoke w/ Apple and they told me it was quite alright.
