I have one and It still works.
They usualy sell for about $125, so 35 is a good price.

Yeah, I'm not planning on getting one. My collection is focused on the pro apple line - ie - Power Macs etc. I just thought it was interesting, someone on a different board posted it knowing I'd be curious.

They are pretty cool! The eMates have an Apple serial connector and the newer style Newton 2000 style ports. They have a rechargable battery and a nice bright backlight display and a built-in keyboard. They are pretty quick and cool to play with. Tthe keyboards and serial adapters for the Newton 2000s are rare and expensive, so an eMate is a good solution, plus it gives you the power for a Newton 2000 without the hassle of expensive cables and adapters.

I had a friend who had one of those--he really loved the thing, and it was a pretty good basic laptop alternative back when it was new.

Also the first translucent computer Apple ever made, which has got to be worth something in historical value--sort of an alpha version of the iMac/clamshell iBook, in that it was both affordable and transparent-gooey cased.

I saw one at the MacWorld Boston when they came out.

Mine works fine, and I used it for a long time on hikes and into the backcountry- flash memory has it's benefits. Unless you have seen one, the translucent color can not be truly conveyed. It's beautiful. This article notes that Jobs loved the eMate, he thought of creating a bMate (business). This is apparently true, but the effort was aborted when development of the iBook started.

A very nice person sent me a package containing the Newton OS Text-To-Speech interface. While never officaly released the TTS package made it a usable tool for me.
