Hi,

I know this is not happening any time soon. But do any of you guys think that apple will step into gaming console arena ?? I would love to see them invent a gaming console which would "Change everything" on gaming platform.

Drop your ideas & comments :)

Most iToys can already be classified as gaming consoles as there are lots of games for iOS. I would say that is as close as it will get. If you're thinking about something that could compete with PS3 and X360 for example, I can't see that happening. Apple is concentrating on mobile devices.

They already tried and failed. They already have the iPhone, Touch and iPad as gaming devices that are dominating all gaming, they have no reason to go for another Pippin.

If anything has been proven by MS's entry into the market will be at a loss for a while.

Plus Steve Jobs hates non-casual gaming.

Well who would have thought apple would enter into mobile industry, but they did. Gaming industry is where rest of apples competitor's like sony, MS are flourishing and making money now. And one more fact to support my assumption is, apple would never accept a defeat. Take for instance they released a tablet a long time ago called newton(late 80's) which was tagged as a failure but they came back with ipad, iphone, itouch. So since they failed once in inventing a gaming console they might get into it and mark their stamp ( atleast i am hoping for it:rolleyes:).

Go read their quarterly or annual financial reports and compare it to the rest of their business in amount of margin and then see if your claim holds. Hint: It doesn't.

If apple does a console for a TV it will most likely be an expansion upon the AppleTV as it already uses iOS and it will be a casual gaming device.

Well i am not saying they do:p. All i am trying to say is gaming industry is huge and MS, Sony are making big bucks out of it. So this might be apple's next venture. We all know apple does it perfectly when it comes to technology, so i wish they've gotten into this

They are already a big competitor for DS & PSP when it comes to handheld gaming. But that was un intentional. Apple never thought gaming would grow this big on iphone, itouch & ipad but they did. This victory might give them an idea to re-enter into gaming.

And i agree with you on apple Tv gaming. May be they might integrate console with apple tv. That will be sweet :)

They did, it sucked http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Bandai_Pippin

The Newton was a bit different, in that once they got the software working properly they were actually pretty good, and there's a whole bunch of geeks out there still using them.

(I imagine someone is about to chime in with "I still use my Pippin"...)

I think we might see games on the apple TV, in the same way we've seen piles of iOS games ported to the mac app store, and that could be how apple "eases" into the market, probably mostly taking a bit from the Wii/casual game crowd, then possibly releasing an actual dedicated console (or at least pushing the gaming abilities of their device, as they started to with the ipod touch). But unless they can do something really, really amazing with it I can't see it being a (highly competitive, low profit per unit) market that they'll be going for any time soon

Could you believe that the first pippin released in 1996 in US for $599. 600 dollars for a 16 bit console ?? that was crazy. The time they entered the market was really competitive. But there is a very good chance for the Apple tv to have gaming capabilities added to it in the future. I really want apple to get into gaming console :D

with NVidia no longer making GPUs it looks like we are in for quite the pickle in terms for consoles. AMD/ATI Radeon is owned by amd and unlikely to pair with intel. so unless we see a amd console who knows what is next. a console with intel graphics chip ? hahaha.

NVidia is not making chipsets anymore due to the licensing issues but they are and will be making normal, discrete GPUs, just like they have done for years.

The Amiga 600 launched in 1993 at £400 for a 16 bit console and it was a huge success.
The Gameboy was an 8bit console that survived just over a decade.

Bittage and price don't matter too much. It's all about the games.

ONly problem with an Apple console is what would the interface be?

That's arguably one of the most important parts of a game console.

The Wii sold the most consoles using a new unique gaming interface.

I don't think a touchscreen would cut it for gaming either.

I do think with the right interface Apple could kick some butt here because they could go directly to the digital distribution model pioneered with iTunes/iOS. And skip retail-selling of games. And get games prices down which then in turn attract customers.

Also it would show the absurdity of the claims that the App Store isn't open when it is compared with today's consoles.

The question is what would be the interface?

Personally I would love a keyboard/mouse game machine. I love myself pc gaming but hate the hassles.

I like the depth of pc games too.

However I know I may be in the minority here. Many like sitting on the couch and gaming. And sacrifice some depth for that.

But would love to see a keyboard/mouse game machine.

Other problem would be price. Apple doesn't sell products cheap. And they do not make cheap products.

And their products are quiet which is the anti-thesis of some game consoles today.

But imagine a Mac Mini-type of form factor as a console. Somewhat larger. No disc drive. Dedicated gpu. Bring your own keyboard/mouse/monitor as it is. Borrow black plastic case from the ATV2 to keep price down if needed.

Runs iOS for console gaming. Could also be used as a computer. $799ish. Connected to App store.

Personally that's what I would like to see.

IN some ways we have that. Buy a Mac Mini.

But I would like to see a faster dedicated gpu in there. And the boost to gaming would be huge if it was marketed somewhat as a device that also games like the Touch and iPad are marketed. And if its interface much simpler with less overhead.

Why should they not include gaming capabilities in APPLE TV ? That would be sweet. Including game center in Itunes. That would make a hell lot of gamers to shift to apple, as we know apple's stability and reliability in their products. I am not saying apple to get into game developing but they can incorporate the gaming features in Apple Tv so that 3rd party gaming developers like ACTIVISION, EA, etc.. could include apple in theier development platform :apple:

i do agree that the atv is a good method for this kind of apple gaming, and with the new chipsets capable for ios intergration comming out next year
it could cetrenly be built, and even if they went a little heavy handed and put twice the graphics power that they would intergrate into a normal ios device bumping up the price to mabye the $250 area it would still be around a quarter of the ps3's launch price while offering somewhat console quality games.( i.e the ipad 2 has got some half way between xbox1 and xbox360
graphics. now doubble it for the new chips then doubble it again to put 2 new ipad 3 worth of power, now were getting somewhere.)
so if apple had a change of heart and decided it wanted to revolutionise another technological aspect of our lives I think you could count on it being small, compact and probably fanless like the atv...

I think there will be something out there for you, the moment the market start treating us some Thunderbolt graphics cards. Then it will be an easy task to build a gaming machine that would run on your ATV, your ACD or your iMac... Apple could have gone with the industry standard and added HDMI/DVI to its products, but instead we will have to wait and see if the world catches on.

Hi

Have to agree with that :)

Instead of Apple making a game console, I think it would be great for existing game companies like Nintendo to make games for the iPad/iPad 2 and iPhone/iPod. Could you imagine Super Mario Galaxy on an iPad 2? How about Pokémon on an iPod Touch or iPhone? It could easily be done because the hardware is there, but a game company like Nintendo would never support another console. A company like Sega (who doesn't make game consoles) could do it, but they seem to either be leaning in the arcade direction or the existing consoles direction (PS3, 360, Wii, etc.).

The console gaming space is too competitive as it is; Apple wouldn't stand a chance. Microsoft and Sony sell their consoles at launch at a loss, recouping the money on royalties from games. Apple always aim to make a significant profit on their devices, so they're screwed from the get-go.

The closest entity to Apple in the gaming space IMO is Nintendo, who would've died years ago were it not for their amazing first-party games. But Apple has no IPs to roll with, so they can't emulate Nintendo.

Besides, as far as they're concerned they have a gaming platform that makes money; the iPod Touch and other iOS devices.

Why imagine Pokemon on an iPod? It's already playable and brilliant on the DS. Infact the next step for Pokemon will be on the 3DS - tech Apple don't even use yet.

The only thing that would improve Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 would be HD resolutions. Using solely a touchscreen as a controller would make it worse (be it an iPad or WiiU).
