The battery on my 2015 15" MBPr was on its last leg so I took it in to get a new replacement. Whenever I disconnect the power cable and other times just randomly, my entire MBP freezes. Even the Finder. Pretty much every hour. I just leave it hanging and after about a minute it reboots itself with the all familiar messages as seen in my screenshots.

One time I had the folder with a question mark so I made sure everything was backed up once I got it into Safe Mode. I reset PRAM etc. I could reinstall the OS but that shouldn't make a difference. Either your OS is working or it's not. Either there is something wrong with the battery/disk or there isn't. I did a repair from the macOS utility but everything was fine.

I'm going to bring it in AGAIN so they can look at it, but in the meantime what do you think it is?

Fixed it. (at least for now it's not happening).

Damn it came back. So weird. Looks like I'm going to have to bring it back to the Apple store idiot geniuses.

The first two are a kernel panic.

The flashing question mark means: no valid OS found.

Both could be storage related.

KP in particular can be be either hardware (often RAM related), or software...third party kernel extensions.

You might try running in Safe Mode, to test. If you still see a KP in Safe Mode...could point at hardware, not software.

Yup, I know what they mean but not why they're happening.

I was in SafeMode before, but didn't find any issues. Mind you, can't stay in SafeMode for a long time.

You mentioned storage issue. Why would there be a storage issue with a 2014/2015 SSD? Can you give examples of the type of issues? For me, it's not a storage issue because I have 330GB available.

It sometimes appears to happen when I unplug/plug the MBP, but now I'm not so sure.

Question:

I was doing a shake test to see if maybe they didn't set the battery or something else right when they assembled my machine. When I shake my MBP horizontally left/right something is moving inside. I can tell it's only one part moving. Considering we're talking about a MacBook which has all its parts crammed in there, it's quite noticeable. It seems to be shifting about 4mm every time I shake it. I can definitely hear it. Sometimes you can hear the keys moving a bit, but I'm not talking about the key mechanics. This is definitely a more significant part. I just don't know if that's normal. Should it be absolutely silent when you shake a MacBook? No parts moving even the slightest?

Here's a panic report.

What's weird is this line. Why would it say this? This is SSD not SATA so this line is very odd.
Root disk errors: "Could not recover SATA HDD after 5 attempts. Terminating."

It's mentioning registers. Could this be a RAM issue? But why would this start happening the day AFTER Apple replaced the battery?

Here's a panic report.

What's weird is this line. Root disk errors: "Could not recover SATA HDD after 5 attempts. Terminating."
This is SSD not SATA.
Physical Drive:
Device Name: APPLE SSD SM1024F
Media Name: AppleAPFSMedia
Medium Type: SSD

It is possible the SATA cable may be damaged. You may continue to experience these symptoms such as panics, unusable, and unable to boot OS. After Apple service, you do get 90 days warranty and you may want to revisit them to tell them what you experienced after the repair.

Ahhh really? Interesting. So they damaged it when they replaced my battery. Is the SATA cable something that would be touched during battery replacement?

It must be from their repair. There's no other explanation. It started doing this the day or the day after I brought it home.

So if I bring it back and they say I need to replace the SATA cable and they make me pay a billion dollars what can I do?
[doublepost=1557712109][/doublepost]That damaged/loose SATA cable could explain why I get KPs only when I move the MBP. It has never happened just while stationary. (I don't think.)

It would happened every time I disconnected the power cable to move it to another area of the house. But since I was moving it, maybe it was the cable moving around and maybe nothing to do with the power cable/battery after all.

And that would also explain why it doesn't go away in Safe Mode. (I'm still testing safe mode but I think it happened in Safe Mode as well.)

Yup I know about the 90 days. I planned on going back anyway because something is obviously wrong. In the meantime I wanted to get various opinions from you guys.

p.s. Does it matter if i go back to the same store? I mean is it recommended? Or irrelevant?
[doublepost=1557713078][/doublepost]I've been really shaking this thing in every direction trying to get a reaction from that possible damaged / loose STA cable but I cannot replicate the kernel panic.

Maybe it's just something I have to wait for again. I'll restart to get out of Safe Mode and see if it happens because right now, it doesn't seem to be happening in Safe Mode.

It wouldn't matter as long as you still have the proof that service was rendered to show they may have damaged some component in the repair. In store, they should be able to diagnose the fault. However, you can also try to run OS on an external drive to see if you will continue to experience it. See link below. If running on external is fine, either your drive is corrupted or damaged or cable is damaged. To rule out the corrupted drive, you may have to wipe and reinstall OS.

Maybe a clean install would be easier since I have everything backed up anyway.

But...... if I have already done diagnostics (D) and verified everything was ok via Disk Repair would there still be a possibility that the drive is corrupted?

I am running EtreCheck now.

Thanks

I ran EtreCheck. It didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. Feel free to look it over. I think I'll try to replicate the KP a few more times in Normal Mode and Safe Mode. Then I'll do a clean install.

Also, I will run macOS Mojave from my Mojave USB thumb drive and see what happens.

So the KP occurred in Safe Mode too. And it occurred exactly when I pulled the MagSafe off and moved my MacBook to my desk. I am 90% sure it occurred at the exact moment when the MagSafe detached but I supposed it could've happened seconds after. I highly doubt it was from picking up my MacBook because it froze again when it was just sitting in one spot.

So right now I was thinking of wiping my HD and doing a clean install to test for a corrupt SSD. Do you think there is any point? I mean what are the chances of a corrupt SSD over it being a result of them replacing the battery? The problem started happening when I brought my MBP home from Apple.

So do you recommend I still test for a corrupt HD?

All sounds like hardware. Nothing for it but take it back and make your case.

They may want to wipe and install...to rule out software. Pretty standard procedure.

Bad SATA cable or SSD could cause the KPs.
Cable I can understand. SSD I cannot understand because the problem started the day I brought home my MBP from Apple Genius after they replaced my battery. Never had this issue since 2014. A little too coincidental don't you think?

I don't even think there's a point in doing a clean install because it's not the SSD. All tests I did on the drive say everything is fine with it too.

Anyway, I'll take it in tomorrow.
[doublepost=1557891095][/doublepost]Further tests going deeper with checking SMART status.
[doublepost=1557891216][/doublepost]Hey, with Disk Utility most drives have two parts on the left pane. The product name at the top and then the custom name below it.

Why does mine have the additional Container disk1?

Perhaps you misunderstand.

I worked for quite a few years as a certified Apple tech at a Authorized Apple Reseller and Service Center.

There is a process that is basically scripted for diagnosis; it is not up to individual techs to do what they think is prudent.

If they need to follow the steps and do a clean install, they will. They won't take your word for it...or any customer. They have to do the steps, in order. It is a requirement. As I have been away from that world for about 7 years, I would not be surprised if the process is more refined, and hopefully better. But there will be a process, and it will be built for customers that do not do their own diagnosis, because that is the reality for the vast majority of customers.

If they replace the SATA cable, and the issue is not resolved, they will move on to storage (likely). RAM would be the first suspect on any board with removable RAM. Next...they would swap the logic board.

Point is, all your testing, while valid and prudent...and educational, won't matter to Apple. They will follow their process regardless.

Welome to APFS. This is the new normal.

I'm very familiar with how they operate. What I'm saying is that from what I've tried and from what has happened since they repaired it, this has happened so I have a pretty good idea of what it is.

Also my machine is not under warranty so except for maybe a cable, any repairs they might say are needed I will be doing myself. So it's in my best interest to deduce as much as possible on my own.

Apple might very well say, oh well this problem seems new and doesn't have anything to do with the battery so it's going to cost this much to fix it.

Anyway, I won't know anything definitely until they look at it tomorrow.

I'm also doing a clean install right now.

Thanks

Ahhh really? Interesting. So they damaged it when they replaced my battery. Is the SATA cable something that would be touched during battery replacement?
I very much doubt there is a cable. In every new laptop, SSD module plugs directly into the MB. I dunno how the innards of the MBP looks like so I don't know if they would have to removed the SSD to replace the battery or not. If they did, might be something as simple as the SSD not plug in properly. Worst case would be a damage mother board (bent pins, damaged chips, or whatever)

The best thing to do is have Apple look over the machine again and have the KP occur while they're testing it. I would not recommend trying to open up you MBP to fix it yourself, even if it's just re-seating the SSD. They could void your 90 day warranty and make you pay for repairs.

Yeah I'm definitely not opening it before they look at it.

I did a clean install last night so I'll use it for a couple of days before I bring it it again.

If There is a KP again then we will know it's a bad battery or maybe logic board issue since this KP occurs when I am connecting/disconnecting MagSafe and started occurring after my repair.

If it's logic board I hope they don't want to make me pay since it's OOW.
