This was the smoothest pre-order I've ever done. The store was available on time, the website was actually functional, and they had and still have enough inventory. Did Apple have their act together to make enough phones and get their website to handle the traffic this time? Or was the demand lighter than normal? I can't imagine there was light demand, so I'm guessing Apple finally got it down.

Normally 1st gen redesigned iPhone Apple would encounter production issues like the X OLED and Face ID issue was resolved so this year no issue and with existing suppliers and one modem supplier. You can tell when there are enough supplies when Apple offer SIM-free models at launch. However, Xr may have production issue LCD with Face ID since it will release next month and if supply will meet demand.

Or maybe just less people are pre ordering the phone

I think there is a couple factors here:
1. The Xs only required a few changes from the X - a new motherboard, a new camera module and a new color option and it was basically good to go. A little more work for the Xs Max but it really just came down to a bigger screen and enclosure than the Xs so no real bottlenecks
2. Along with ample supply the demand probably wasn't anything crazy considering that many people who really wanted an edge to edge screen iPhone already bought the X and many of those folks won't upgrade this year and many of the folks with older iPhones may be waiting on the Xr.

you can literally purchase any model in any color, in any configuration for release day pick up in store right now. unless they have insane inventory this year i'd say this new crop of flagships are a complete bust

A lot of people are happy with their X. Myself as much as I love X I missed the bigger phone. I got the XS Max and will be giving my wife the X.

People aren't willing to pay these ridiculous prices for a phone anymore. It's about time people speak with their wallets, let the company burn to the ground when they are sitting on a stock pile of phones like they are cash. I ALWAYS loved Apple but I hate what they've become.

They do like taking our money.

The global market is pretty well saturated now. People just don't feel the urge to update as much anymore. The phones all look the same and basically can all do the same thing. Many more less expensive choices that do what people want them to do. $1000+ for a phone is not a market supported by many, and not on an annual upgrade anymore.

I was a upgrade every year guy for the last 8 years. After this one I won’t be doing that anymore. From $869 2 years ago to $1249 this year. That is a HUGE jump. Since sales havent been increasing year over year they need to make more money on each phone instead. Great for the company and investors but screwed us bad. I hope less and less people buy them so they try and change there approach, for all of our sake.

This isn't what financial analysts have been saying based on surveys with clients, forecasts are for as much as 50% of the existing iPhone customer base upgrading to one of the 3 new models - which would be a massive win for Apple. We will know when we see financial results next year.

People aren't upgrading.

Probably less demand.

Let's see if things pick up for the XR's ...

The XR I'm sure is a factor in it. But also, shipping dates have been pushed back already. It's also possible they had more stock this year, esp. with them touting the fact that this is their fastest rollout ever.

I honestly think that they're just more prepared than they used to be. There was never a clear system back in the day, and it would change year by year. Now with the App, and pre-approval and all, launch day is pretty much confirmed as long as you're awake on time.

I think people are willing to spend the money. It’s just that a 2-3 year old phone is still so good it’s not as crucial now. Certainly that’s the case for me.

That’s a guess on your part
