Holy Moly !

Please Please Apple do not screw it this time !! You have started it at a very interesting point. Spatial Audio Coming to Airpods Pro is like an Angel Kissed it. It has become Out of the World. Man just by the description which Craig Federighi made it sounded such a Wow thing and I am sure is gonna be a great experience.

But Like in History Apple Please do not **** it up with your Pathetic Firmware Updates.

Good going Apple.

That was a Good One !!

How does firmware update on these? I just ordered a pair, and pretty good time to order, it looks like.

Not now, but in future with more firmware updates releasing, who knows it may happen again. As with the first firmware update that came with Airpods Pro had pretty good ANC but later after that with subsequent firmware updates Apple blew it away !

I would seriously suggest watching the PS5 dev talk from earlier this year where Cerny talked about this a lot.

Basically, it uses special processing through HRTF models (head-related transfer function) that basically describe how your ears and head knows which exact direction the sound is coming from. Your ear modifies the sound depending on direction, in addition to your brain measuring the time difference between your ears. All in all, if you have 3D metadata embedded in the sound (Atmos for example), using that metadata and transforming the sounds you can trick your head.

This doesn't need special hardware at all. You do the transformations with an audio chip or the CPU/GPU. The big deal is the gyroscope data, so it can track your head movement relative to the sound source, similarly how PSVR does it.

Xbox One supports spatial audio with any stereo headphones, just like Windows. PSVR is the best demo though because it uses a gyroscope for complete immersion (well, obviously, since it's VR).

I guess it should work with Movie watching (ATV)?

I wonder if Google will allow multichannel YouTube videos to be made, since that’s where something like spacial audio will be taken advantage of with most people.

I wonder how would music sound with spatial sound ? Does the Spatial Sound kick in at all ? if you are only playing music ?

This is great news! I used to have Dolby Headphone headphones and they were very good with 5.1

Now I need to sell my AirPods and get the Pros :)

I doubt it would make any difference to normal music, since it doesn't contain any of the spatial data. But you can get music encoded with 5.1/7.1 etc surround sound details. So hopefully that would work.
Also, the new trend of 8D music, that I believe attempts to do this by encoding the music's left/right channels to simulate spatial movements. So it will be interesting to see if that works better with the new firmware, but I think this new firmware will be specifically looking for the surround sound data used in film audio
