Is there any chance for it to be updated again during MWSF 08?
The AeBX thing really got me bummed, now I got to eBay the old one and upgrade to the new model!

That they didnt add N wireless or the new Intel graphics, makes me think these could be it for the mini.
Maybe they have something better in the works, but it seems like the iMac will be the low end mac, sad.
I going to buy a stock mini with 10.5 and iLife, seems like it won't be a good deal till then.

Good point, I will at least wait till Leopard is out too.
Then perhaps I shall use those installation CDs to install Leopard on my MacBook Pro as well

The key is timing it so that you get the general 10.5 install DVD, not the mini restore disk. Could be helpful with my old TiBook

How do you actually get the retail disk instead of the restore disk?
I would be happy with the restore disks, just put the "victim" Macintosh to target disk mode for the "steal" and install it using the correct Mac.
The mini is Apple's low end product. Would you really expect them to talk about about a very minor Mac mini upgrade alongside a major iMac overhaul? While one could say the mini is overpriced, at least it's still offered. Keep in mind it's about as powerful as the best Mac made two years ago and it's a great entry level Mac. I was glad to see it didn't drop off the product list today.
It's a little hard to believe the mini didn't get 802.11n. Except for that it's what I was waiting for so I've placed my order. Beats the crap out of AppleTV, even at twice the price.

With the TDM method for laptops if you are installing it using a Mini's restore disks you don't get laptop specific apps like Photo Booth for instance. And similarly if you do it to a Mini using a MacBook to install from the restore discs you get Photo Booth (and no way to use it).

There is no such thing as a retail copy of OSX (retail by the definition set by Windows) because every Mac comes with OSX. All copies of OSX apart from the restore discs are by definition upgrade versions.
it wouldn't be so bad if the mini was $200 cheaper. but that would be apple tv territory there.
The upgrade disc, typically given away in the circumstances we are discussing, will only UPGRADE an installed version of OS X. It cannot be used to fully install the OS. (I know because I've gotten them before.) When it comes time to do a complete reinstall, you must first reinstall the previous version and then upgrade it. It sucks.
There is indeed a retail version of OS X. It costs $129 and will fully install OS X on any Mac that is new enough to run it. It is not just an upgrade, although it can be used to upgrade your existing OS if you prefer that to a full install. Apple has already set the price for Leopard at the usual $129.
I think the Mac Mini has been a disappointment to Apple. It really hasn't seemed to do that job of bringing in people on the cusp between PCs and Macs... But can you blame them? The Mac Mini for what it was was over priced and a lot of times you got much more powerful machines for that money in the PC market, even though you wouldn't get OSX. Apple is caught because they don't want to get rid of that niche low end product, yet it is not a pride and joy of their lineup obviously. I think it will struggle on for a while until the upgrades become so minimal that it just seems best to cancel it.

I think Apple made a huge mistake making it so much like a laptop. With desktop parts it could have been cheaper, or more full featured to compete better with WinPCs. For about $700 you get a WinPC that has basically "everything." For $100 MORE, you get a Mac mini that seems a bit crippled. To many people, because of its size the mini seems too much like a toy to seriously consider buying, even though it's a fine computer.
I'm very disappointed in Steve Jobs' statement today that Apple thinks it's an "all-in-one world." This means they're going to shove more iMacs down our throats and will probably quit making any headless Macs before long.
It's hard to predict right now. However... They DID actually bother upgrading the specs but no upgrade on the design... they could have EASILY slapped some black instead of white in there and made it match the new imacs, but the didn't. I am thinking they are just doing that to tide over the bunch who have been worried about the demise of the mini until they have a chance to devote a bit of time to it. The imac even didn't seem like a full fledged redesign.
Perhaps (and this is just hopeful speculation) a complete mini - redesign and integration of some apple tv things etc are in the works for January or spring 2008 and this current bump was just a hold over while they were too busy with the iphone and imac.
Even the imac (like someone mentioned in previous forums) looks like it's half way through a complete redesign. Like ... going towards the iphone look, but not quite there yet. Seems like they have to wait until they have the tech and freedom for what they WANT to do with it. Instead of making people wait they are releasing updates for the mini while they work on a new and awesome redesign that will attract people to it, and the imac until they can get what they want out of it ... perhaps another year from now we will see a much more major imac redesign....

Ouch, but then again it is not like OS X is something that needs to be reinstalled very often, so I guess it isn't too bad to just spend an additional 30 minutes installing the previous version first to appease the installer.

I just hope to see wireless-N and maybe the improved Intel graphics chipset in that thing.
