Sorry if this has been discussed before but why is this accessory necessary?

The only thing I can think of is it is needed to pass HDMI audio, but then doesn't that mean the built-in HDMI on the Mini is not within specs?
 
It's an HDMI cable sold/provided by Apple. Nothing strange here.

This is just Apple's branding on an HDMI cable. It first suggested to me that there was something special when I saw words "Apple HDMI" put together. :D
