Apple ID and icloud Email Both Allow iCloud Sign In

Hi,

I have an Apple ID which is a Gmail address. I can sign into my iCloud using an iCloud email address also. These are not separate accounts as they take the same password and refer to the same storage plans etc....

Can somebody please explain this to me? Is it possible that the iCloud email address is simply an alias? Although, I don't have any other iCloud email addresses.

As far as I know you get the iCloud email assigned automatically when you sign up. So, testuser@gmail.com will get you a testuser@icloud.com email es well.
