Hello I'm new to this forum. Many years ago I created my Apple user ID with a new Mac and iPhone. Since then I've been an Android user for my phone but my wife is well immersed in iOS and has been iPhone and iPad user since. so even though the Apple ID is set up under my email, she is the one who primarily uses it and virtually every ios app belongs to her. 5 years ago I bought a new iMac and set it up with the Apple user ID that I already had.
So something that is annoying is that whenever she uses iMessage I I'm able to see it pop up on my iMac and now here lately she's been able to see my Google Chrome activity on her iPad. So basically she knows when I'm Christmas shopping for her and can see what I'm doing. Also I just found out that she is getting me an iPad for Christmas (I accidentally found it in the closet).
So I'm thinking ahead to when I first activate my iPad and wonder if I should be setting up a new Apple ID under one of my other email addresses. If I use the existing one, is there anyway to keep her and my stuff separate? I don't know if my question is making any sense and I apologize in advance. Also when I first activate my iPad I don't want all of her apps filling up my screen. I know this sound like dumb questions for someone who's been using Apple products for a couple decades, but I really have steered clear of iCloud and anything in that realm.

Apple IDs are not meant to be shared. These are personal accounts.

If you just create a new Apple ID then you should be fine and you can have your own iCloud subscription that’ll store everything related to your Apple ID.

There’s no way to keep things separated if you’re using the same ID. It’s better to have your own Apple ID to avoid confusions and use as you like.

You should set up your own Apple ID. As mentioned, they are not meant to be shared for exactly the reasons you've encountered.

Definitely don't share your Apple ID. That will end in a disaster.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Not to sound stupid here, but will anything have to change in regard to my iMac profile? In other words can I link it to my new Apple ID? Or will that somehow cause me to lose access to the files that are pertinent to our family IE photos music videos etc.

I would recommend she create her own new Apple ID, and you use your old one on your iMac and iPad.

She will use her new Apple ID on her iPhone and iPad.

You can then set up family sharing to tie the two Apple IDs together, and then she will be able to use a lot of the same apps that she bought under your Apple ID. She may have to buy some again if they do not support family sharing.

This assumes that your old Apple ID is related to your name somehow. If it is something generic then maybe she keeps using it, and you create a new one. I still recommend setting up family sharing after the new Apple ID is created so you can share purchases that support it.

Won't that be a problem with iMessage? she has all those contacts all those conversations etc. I would prefer not to change anything for her because she has so many apps and so much activity going back many years on this Apple ID.

If you create a new ID, you won’t have access to the photos. To solve that problem, log into AppleID.apple.com, scroll and request your iCloud data. After a few days, Apple will make all your data available to download. Once it is downloaded, it will be on your computer and your can move any of the photos and other personal files to your new Apple ID iCloud via the drag and drop method.

I suggest creating a new ID and your wife needs to do the same.

I believe if you back up her phone to your iMac and then restore from backup it will copy over all the photos/messages/etc. Then she should be able to change the Apple ID to the new one and keep all that info. I am not 100% sure on this though.

The person with the new id may not have access to the cloud but to the family computer still if the files are stored there too. As a thought.

ok just so I'm clear on this based on all the answers from above. Once i get my new ipad, I will create a new apple ID and then from my old apple ID (which my wife uses), i will enable family sharing. That way, i have access to any applications she has purchased. -- side note, i assume i will need to leave my imac alone since I am using Pro Logic X that was purchased on the old apple ID. That's the main thing I need to have access to on my iMac.

You really do not want any devices using the old ID as you will still have issues with things getting mixed up. Your devices should be using your ID and her devices should be using her ID. If you need access to that particular purchase you may want to consider having her create the new ID and you use the old one.
