Apple ID does not have to equal iCloud e-mail

I have my original iTunes ID from 2003. It is also my Apple ID for the store. It is not an e-mail address.

I also have a .mac address that is also a .me. That address is my iCloud ID.

For those of you concerned that iTunes match requires an e-mail ID, rest assured that you old ID is fine.

DO NOT convert old non-email ID's to e-mail.

It is safe and wise to continue to use it.

I have no legacy problems with the old ID. All my purchases link to one ID.

Thus I have two separate ID's. One for iTunes Match and one for iCloud.

As of yet, Apple does not allow you to merge ID's. Many of us have Apple ID's before we got an Apple e-mail address. Thus it is best to have only one ID connected to iTunes.

E-mail addresses are different. I never got an Apple e-mail address until .mac. It then became MobileMe and now is iCloud. That address needs to be e-mail related. Also it needs to be individual related.

In my house, my wife and I have different iCloud accounts and share one Apple ID.

We match with iTunes and have our own contacts, calendars, etc.

Even if you don't share an Apple ID, you want the same ID you used to purchase iTunes music for your iTunes Match ID.

If you are late to the iTunes game and have the same Apple ID as you Apple iCloud ID, then by all means use just one ID.

You can still share the Apple ID with your wife for iTunes Match assuming you shared it for her iTunes account. And she can have a different iCloud address.

I kind of want to link iTunes Match to my iTunes ID, but will I still be able to keep everything in sync with iCloud? ... it seems like you have to sign into one or the other.

I wish there was a way to get this multiple IDs stuff straightened out.

No, iTunes Match and iCloud sync are two separate services.

That is what confused me and why I made this thread to help others. It took some reading to realize that they are two completely separate parts of iCloud.

To have access to your purchased music and your DRM music videos, you need to have it on the same ID, i.e. your iTunes purchase ID and your iTunes Match ID need to be the same.

It doesn't matter what iCloud sync ID you use as that service is separate.

Yes, that needs to be fixed but for a different reason.

By mistake, my cousin has purchased iTunes music with three ID's. That is giving him problems syncing music in iTunes Match. He decided to use the ID in which he purchased the most music.

He should be able to merge all three ID's.

And yeah there are a number of good reasons that allowing merging of IDs needs to happen.
