Apple ID needs updating - recurring notice

In Big Sur from time to time I keep getting a notification on system preferences icon and clicking on it it says that my Apple id needs updating and that some Apple services will not work until it's done.
I click on Apple id and it suggests I click on update settings and I do that.
It asks for my Apple ID password and I enter it.
The notification then goes away for a week or so then comes back again.
What's this about?

Also if I boot into Catalina it asks for the same, every time.

Is this normal or at least what others are seeing?


This is dual-booted on a 2012 rMBP (so not supported for BS).

bump, I have same issue except my notification happens every time I boot up. 2017 iMac Pro running Big Suc.

When that notice pops up, it usually means you aren't signed into all of Apple's services. If all you do is log in when you get the notice, the notification will keep happening.

Hi Quackers! I get the same notice when alternating boot between my internal and external SSD’s. I don’t see it when staying on a OS, or when rebooting into the same OS. As you recall our devices are identical (rMBP mid-2012).

I forgot to comment on the “again and again” observation. I see that too. My “fix” was to wait a minute or so before clicking on the notice to start the login procedure. It is as if the Apple ID conversations are slow and if you go too fast it doesn’t have time to process entries so it just starts the sign in process again. It is common still for me to have to enter the same password twice or even three times. Relax and have an ale!

I tried this and it didn't solve the issue on my iMac. still have same issue.

bump. things I have tried with No success. reinstall OS, 3 times. Sign out of all Apple Devices and log back in. Delete password keychain from iMac. Change Apple ID password. None of these have worked on the iMac, other Apple devices are all acting happy together. I cannot sync password keychain on the iMac, this was happing before I deleted password keychain on the iMac and continues to happen. iMac is working but I have the annoying red dot reminder on system preferences......

Do you have more than one macOS installation on it?
On my 2012 rMBP I have Catalina and Big Sur. Big Sur asks only once for the sign in then it's fine.
Catalina keeps asking for the AppleID sign in time and time again.
To be honest I'm using my new M1 MBA now so the problem is not relevant to me any more but it's still a puzzle.
I wondered if AppleID HQ didn't like me signing in on the same hardware using to versions of macOS.
Just an idea.
