My messaging apps on my iMac, Macbook, and iPad stopped working last Friday. No messages could be sent or received. I could send and receive messages on my iPhone. My iPad is WiFi only, no cellular. I singed out of iCloud and then back in. Did not help. Got message that stated my iCloud and iMessage accounts did not match. But they did match. I never had more than one iCloud and iMessage account. That error message was bogus.
On Saturday, near noon, everything started working like nothing had happened. Messages started to come in and I could send out.
Then I got a message to update Apple ID settings on my iMac and Macbook. I was also asked to enter passwords for my iMac, Macbood, and iPad.
Saturday night I opened Photos app to look at a video I took with my iPhone. The video was not there. Some photos I took were also missing. The Photos app then announced all my photos and movies were being uploaded! I thought the point of using iCloud Photos was to have a secure place to store you photos. Wonder where they all went?
Finally, today at noon, my iPad presented the message to update my Apple ID. I also had to enter the passwords for the iPad and my iPhone. The Photos app now had all photos and videos.
I think all is working fine now. But I am not looking too hard.
I did not create any of these problems. Has anyone else experienced this.

I have received the iCloud and iMessage accounts don’t match before. Like you, I ignored it.

As to the other parts of your saga, it sounds like normal security procedure, as annoying as it may have been. If you had been signed out of your accounts and forced to enter a new password for your account, that could have meant someone was trying to hack into your account and Apple‘s security put the brakes on that.

I was thinking the same. But they could at least let me know what was going on. Then I would not be looking for problems that don't exist.
