Bought a 2nd hand iMac recently with Monterey OS; diligently went through the manual. Without going into details I currently feel that I have little more than a smear of excrement; nothing much works and no user guide relating to the real world aka for a new user. e.g. can't download apps such as Chrome (community indicates that this is normal - unless a workaround works - which it hasn 't. An attempt to download Chrome and get a working browser went into a loop etc. Presumably some Apple users have found some basic functionality - somehow; does anyone know of some guide written for adults i.e. a linear set of instructions for a real world user?

You should be able to easily download and install any number of browsers. If your community really indicates that you can't, you need a better community.

If your community thinks not being able to download Chrome is normal, your community is trash. Find a new one. You can download and install any Mac app that you want. If apps aren’t installing at all, you might want to consider reinstalling macOS Monterey. Or contact Apple support. Also what model is your secondhand Mac?

Anyone who creates a basic Apple ID and tries to download any App. is directed to an endless review loop; this has been a standard feature of MacOS for years and again and again questions appear in the "Apple communtity". Deleting the ID results in numerous problems and no warning came up; in fact you can't delete the ID; it goes to Apple admin who delete it within some range of 7 days; they say everything is deleted but then its discovered that the same email address can't be used for 30 days (of forever according to an Apple Chat operative) plus boxes open up at each login asking specifically for the defunct ID login p/w. It gets worse; although they say no payment details are req'd it seems clear that they are (maybe they can be deleted after but that wasn't stated) and it gets worse; it seems they can only be put in (on the same form) in a particular area; and worse; if the wrong area is selected you don't get an error msg. in many attempts it just stopped at the phone no. area and it went red and stopped (no. was correct and went in seamlessly in the correct/secret area). Its worse than this (just on ID area there is another complete story). Downloading Chrome from Safari at first produced some msg. about it being an Image and no updates would be done; second time it wouldn't download; having got access to the App. store - it wasn't there; tried on Safari again and it downloaded OK.

For Mac beginners the David Pogue Missing Manual books can be helpful. Not sure if there is one yet specifically for Monterey.

MacRumors can also be a very helpful community if you share a problem in a constructive way…

Thanks; my comment above was for the record
Is this a troll post? I didn't think any Macs came with manuals these days.
From recollection if you go into Apple support there is an area called Manuals and a long list specifying various models and at the end .... there is no manual (just a quick start guide).

Nothing on your post rings true.

Nothing.

I was a Windows user for eons - ever since Windows 1.0 back in the 1980s.

I had none of these issues the first time I used a Mac.

I just checked "NOTES" for a couple I'd saved but nothing there; they had disappeared before and re-appeared; maybe this is a sophisticated security system and one day the secret guide will ......

Never heard of, or experienced this issue, and I have been a heavy Mac user for more than years. But maybe I'm not understanding what you are saying.

Deleting the ID results in numerous problems

There are a lot of issues with Apple IDs, many of them outside apples' control.

Downloading Chrome from Safari at first produced some msg. about it being an Image and no updates would be done; second time it wouldn't download; having got access to the App. store - it wasn't there; tried on Safari again and it downloaded OK.

You are listing a whole lot of problems all jammed in together. To resolve them each needs to be worked on individually. For example, for chrome you should see:

You hit the download button and the .dmg file is downloaded to your Downloads Directory:

You click to open the image file and then see:

which is telling you to drag the icon to the applications directory. You simply drag it to the box with the down arrow in it.
