Don't worry this probably doesn't effect YOU but I need to vent!

Yesterday* I could get an iMac direct from Apple for £719 today I've got to buy through a 3rd party and pay £899 that's a price increase of 25%!

For reasons known only to them AppleStore Online has stopped delivering to the Jersey, ****'s.

Looks like it'll be back to MS Windows PC's next time I 'upgrade':(

*Actually a couple of weeks ago dogsbody forewarned of this but I just had it confirmed today.

so let me float a hypothetical here...

i have a girlfriend in england (maybe you already know this from reading the boards...), but when i come to visit her- if i show up with a suitcase full of apple-ware, what stops me from selling it to you for a slight profit?

i guess i don't understand how apple gets away with the higher UK prices...

Assuming you get the stuff through customs you would be able to sell it on I guess and make a profit.

The thing is it's not that Apple sell their gear for much more in the UK than they do in the States and that's where I used to be OK as Jersey isn't in England or the UK so doesn't/didn't get hit with the 17.5% VAT and still enjoyed the Educational discounts.

Of course the 3rd party resellers here now know that Apple won't sell over the net so market there stuff at the same price as in the UK and pocket the 17.5% to spend on women, drugs and pornography*

1) I think warranty for Apple products is localised for desktop macs except for the laptops?

2) You can't buy Applecare on parallel imported macs.

It happened without warning, dogsbody PM'd me to say it had but I only saw it for myself when I couldn't online today.

Apple won't say.

My guesses are:
a) They have a delivery contract with TNT/UBS/FedEx or someone which is one price plan for the UK. TNT etc. are all franchises here so won't be covered under the same contract. I think this is the most likely as it'll probably work by Post Code. When iTMS UK opened my postcode wouldn't work, I have to use my address with either ant random UK postcode or use my actual postcode in lower case? *maybe I'll screw around with that and try again*
b) VAT admin is a pain in the arse and they can't be bothered.
c) They're sucking up to the bricks & mortar stores locally by promising not to deliver. This I find had to believe as it's going to hurt their sales 'cause the local stores have patchy knowledge at best. The best quoted £180 to swap a hard drive in my iBook and said they couldn't offer any warranty on their work 'cause they hadn't done it before!

That really sucks! There's no one in the UK you could get to purchase it for you and then ship to you?
Yeah but they'd have to pay the same price plus postage so there's no point.

Not sure you're getting the point, you may want to re-read the thread.

That's an absolute joke!! With service confidence like that you may as well undertake the task yourself... ridiculous!!

With regards to possible TNT delivery issues, I do know that TNT themselves don't deliver to the Channel Islands -- rather a local sub-contractor [Condor] undertake the TNT goods and wares from mainland England. Actually they're not that local!!

I know for a fact as I was involved in a recent corporate promo for them. Regardless of them driving about in TNT signed vans, they're not actually TNT. So lordy knows what the blooming heck is going on there, I appreciate the Channel Islands are a relatively small market but the same could be argued of the rest of the UK in comparison to North America, etc., etc.

Quite literally an unforgivable move from Apple et al!!

I did with no problems, and it was actually fun!

Having read the Apple site t&c's they've been updated to specifically state mainland UK, NI & IOM only so I'm sure it's the shipping inflexibility that's screwing us.

Don't worry we'll still happily ship our cheap CD's & DVD's out, we don't mind abiding by the UK's daft VAT laws.

I'm not sure how the rules work over there, but can you buy from a third-party reseller in England for £899 then claim back the tax?

In theory yes but in practice the paperwork is a joke. I've tried this before with other stuff and because the Customs officers at airports etc. hardly ever have to do it they don't know what forms to complete or how to complete them. I've even had times when I've turned up at the airport (EMA) and there was no customs officers on duty!? so you can't complete the forms and can't get your money back, I had the last laugh though 'cause I was going to declare the 20kg of coke I had as well.

The point is that the channel islands have a strange status where they are somehow british and somehow not british, and the "not britishness" means that for some reason they don't want to pay VAT like everyone else in Britain. Nobody living on the British mainland will feel the slightest bit sorry for this guy.

Really!! Is that a fact?

To be fair I'm p!ssed-off that we on the 'mainland' pay through the nose for so many things compared to our North American and mainland European cousins [there are exceptions of course!]... It may be wise to refrain from making blanket comments such as that!!

Oh yeah? I do.

Jersey is a country in it's own right. It has the Monarch of Britain as it's head of state (like a lot of the commonwealth), and also British law.

k

so what would have stopped anyone in jersey buying goods with edu discount plus vat discount and reselling to uk or anywhere?

maybe this is the reason why apple has stopped and hiked prices

They've stopped delivering to the Channel Islands full-stop, as someone from work couldn't get a delivery to Guernsey.

The person on the phone said they had stopped deliveries to the Channel Islands as it was taking to long for them to sort out VAT refunds manually, so they decided it was easy just to refuse to deliver to the Channel Islands.

Apples way of refunding VAT wasn't much fun for the consumer either. First you had to hunt down the VAT request form that was buried deeply in the support section. Then if you were lucky they would knock off the VAT before you were charged. If you were unlucky you would get charged full price then get a refund about a month later. Not too much of a problem when your goods are £25 or so, but when your dropping over 1k on a new system it leaves a hell of a margin for error when it comes to covering the bill.

My main concern is now the availability of Apple goods to the Channel Islands. We have two authorised retailers - one in Jersey whose name escapes me, but when I went there last year impressed me - and then we have Guernsey Computers. They get away with murder for their hardware charges, generally RRP inc VAT and a few quid on top for good measure. Except that is for iPods which they charge at just above Apples non-VAT price as people noticed the pricing discrepancy. But they have a really cr@p range and carry little if not no stock.

So lets now say that you are a Guernsey resident, and you want a new iMac but you want the larger had drive added - well you can't have that now as you can only get it from GC and they will only sell you standard equipment. Want a new PowerMac but want it with Bluetooth and the wireless keyboard and mouse combo? Well then your **** out of luck. You want some software with that, well now you really are joking. You can have a bog standard PowerMac in about 8 weeks, and thats if we order it today, which we wont. So why don't you order this nice Acer that we've had sitting in the window for the last year? They've still got a G4 iMac and an old style ACD on display FFS!

The fact is, it has suddenly just become a nightmare to get a Mac if you live in the Channel Islands. I've managed to get 6 people at work to pick up iBooks, all bought direct through Apple. With the combination of the extra cost and hassle, there is no way that they would buy them now if they were looking to buy a new computer.

And to those that feel "no sypthaphy" just remember the extra couple of quid in your pocket when you next order a DVD/CD/Game from Amazon (Jersey), Play (Jersey) or HMV (Guernsey).

Rant over :)

Why the hell should I pay taxes for people in the UK when I don't live there? I assume you're in the UK and therefore happy to pay 17.5% to HM Customs when you buy an Apple, would you be happy to pay an extra 6% Californian sales tax?
Of course you wouldn't so why when I import something from another country should I pay their sales tax?
