Woodcrest or Conroe
Apple could honestly go either way, with Conroe or Woodcrest.
Woodcrest has already been announced but it won't ship for a couple weeks. Dell had Woodcrest (core2 Xeon) servers up but they won't list a ship date.
The real question will be, will Apple ship the line with dual dual-core or with one dual-core and are they interested in FullyBuffered DIMMs? The new memory is compelling but DDR2 will end up being cheaper. Surprisingly, the Dell memory configs for FBD doesn't seem that bad. I was initially spooked by the fact that it's RAMBUS technology.
I think if Apple is still interested in selling Big beastly towers with lots of RAM slots and lots of board bandwidth they'll release at least one Core2 Xeon desktop workstation. Remember, Apple has been shipping two motherboard configurations for the G5s for most of their revisions.. and they did the same for the first couple revs of the Powermac G4s. I could see a single Conroe on the lower end.. and a full blown dual Woodcrest workstaton on the high end.
There's no reason for such a machine to wait for WWDC though I think that was Apple's intention at the beginning of this year but Intel has since pushed up the time table. If you remember, at the beginning of the year, Woodcrest was due in July-August with Conroe to be released in August(ish). We're a month ahead on those release dates.
I think we might actually see the server and desktop rev before WWDC BUT Apple's in no great hury to rush pro machines since a lot of Pro software isn't universal yet. The only thing pushing Apple is probably that they don't want to be the last one to the party when the hardware is available. It just doesn't look good if Apple releases a workstation based of Core2 a month after Dell releases their workstatons.
