Here are some iPhone OS 4.0 features, according to our guy:

* There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)
* “A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.
* Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
* The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”

Nothing new here, this is what we've been hearing the OS is going to include.

I hope that the last point isn't true. If so, what would ipod touch users get?

Hopefully it won't be too pricey...Please do something about the battery !!! I picked up my 3GS last Friday, and I am astonished about how little the battery lasts, compared to my ol' Nokia E71.

What won't be too pricey? In the past the updates for the iPhone have always been free, if that's what you mean.

People:

iPhone OS 4.0 is NOT a new iPhone. It is a new operating system for the existing iPhones.

The OP is not talking about the next generation iPhone (which people call 4G, which means 4th generation).

I know some of you already know this, but from a couple of the posts above, not all of you do.

What does this mean exactly? Isn't it like that now, at least where required? How many fingers does it take to scroll a list?

I'm guessing it's a reference to something that isn't included in the current software.

My guess is that they are talking about gestures that may work on all screens. The easiest example I can think of is SBSettings when jailbroken. No matter where you are, if you swipe across the top bar, a menu drops down.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

It would be nice if they added an android like notification bar.

This reminded me of the Henry Ford quote about a faster horse.

I don't want the android system - I want apple to come up with something better that nobody else has thought of.

be careful what you wish for. this potentially opens up pandora's box if they don't implement it well, and turn the iPhone into a slow plodding WinMo device

honestly i don't see what the big deal is with multi-tasking, it is phone, it isn't meant to be as productive as a laptop.

iPod was successful because of its simple design, it did 1 thing and it did it well. putting everything but the kitchen sink into an iPhone is not the way to go, Apple should be innovating and coming up with the next great UI or idea, not trying to make the iPhone look like every other smartphone out there

Is this likley to be released soon or will it be in the summer when a new phone might be released?

Whenever the new iPhone is released is most likely the time when OS 4.0 will be released.

Apple has to give devs a chance to ensure that their apps will work with 4.0. They also like to test new OS's with beta-testers to catch and remove bugs.

Most likely Apple will show off (tease us with) OS 4.0 at the upcoming event.

I think apple's multitasking may be something like choosing one or two apps to run in the background and thats it. I don't think your going to be able to have 5 or so apps running the background all the time.
I hope that apple finally does something with the lockscreen. If they can do something like Lockinfo that i have on my jailbroken phone, than maybe i would consider un-jailbreaking. Being able to check most of your important info right on the lockscreen is awesome. If they can do that along with a easy backgroud application, this will be a huge update

What I really would like is that when you are in an application and you receive a text, you can reply to it without having to leave the application. YOu can reply and then it goes back to right where you had left off. I think that would be very handy, especially for someone who texts a lot, does a lot of web browsing, emails, and even gaming.
