I've been looking at lots of case for 5G iPod, but I can't seem to find out that I like. (The closest one was the Speck SkinTight 5G, because it was simple, with access to the controls, and didn't add bulk. However, I've heard lots of horror stories about how you can't get the SkinTights on without scratching, etc. etc. - big turn off.)

Then Apple came out with their own Leather case for it. I saw the price and didn't give it a second thought - $99 is TOO expensive! I looked around and didn't see anything else, so I took a second look at it, beyond the price. After loooking it at, I realized its a really nice simple case: no extra bulk, looks nice, no access to controls, but makes it up my making it easy to pull out the iPod (and this way, the controls aren't needless open to damage when you aren't using the iPod), and the inside of it is microfiber which is really nice and soft and would never scratch the iPod, while also give it padding from bumps. It seems almost too good to be true...but then there is the price. $99. Thats a 1GB iPod shuffle, or a few really nice iPod accessories, like the Dock and iPod to AV cable. I however am tired of using the flimsy iPod case Apple provided as it provides really no protection other than from dust and light scratching, and its annoying to remove the case to access the controls (and its also really unattractive in terms of looks.), and I would like to stop thinking about whether my iPod is safe in my pocket or not.

In other words, should I bite the bullet and get the Apple iPod Leather case?

I appreciate the help.

Well there are a lot of other really nice ipod cases out there, but if you really liked the Apple case...I guess I would buy it if the price isn't too much for you.

why not get the agent 18. That will protect it. To bad it doesn't have a clip though... The leather case is worthless if you ask me since you have to pull the iPod in and out of the case to do anything. This would most likely scratch the iPod over time especially if stuff gets down in the case.

read some of the reviews on the apple website

I think the Apple case is way too expensive, but if it does the job . . .

I just got the Contour Showcase, and I love it. You should check it out.

I can't justify spending 100 bucks on a case. I mean even if you have a 60G Ipod, that's 1/4 of the price you paid for the ipod! I suggest you go and physically look at some cases. See in person how you like it.

I havent seen one of the Apple cases in person yet, and I would certainly have to see it in person before I could spend $100 on it

I was really pleased with the zCover one:

-It came with a clip and a screen protector.

-It covers the click-wheel but it doesnt stop it from properly working and feels pretty good when your turning your thumb.

-It covers the whole iPod and even covers the dock connection with a nice little rubbery flap.

-And the best thing about it was the price: £18.00 ($30.00 in the zCover US store)

I purchased a black leather belkin case, it has a soft screen guard and the inside is lined with a suede-ish liner, full access to controls when the face guard is unbuttoned, it's all rubber and black leather in construction so the case itself can't scratch the goods...plus, when you flip the face guard back, it acts as a kangaroo-style kickstand for viewing videos. I think it was $30.

Have you looked at an Invisible Shield? I love it, doesn't add any bulk whatsoever yet protects nearly every centimeter of my 5G iPod. Plus they're only $24.95 and come with a lifetime warranty.

I love mine, granted it is a skin rather than a case, so it won't protect your iPod from a fall or from dents. But as far as scratches go there's none better.

Hope this helps some. :)

I have an iSkin for my 30 gig iPod Photo, and i love it. The new 5G one comes with a screen protector and a belt clip. They're awesome. I think that they're like 30 bucks? I definitly suggest it.

if you want a high quality leather case for your iPod, look here: http://www.vajacases.com/home/home_en.html

they're handmade, prices start at $50, you have plenty of choices of styles and colors, and you have access to the controls (some even have a clickwheel protector option that protects it, but you can still use it without taking it out of the case).

I'm sure it's nice and all (for $99 it needs to be) but I bought the nano and a $19.99 Agent 18 case for it and I'm super happy with it's quality, looks and it's simple as well.

Same here, the only downside to the Agent 18 case to me is that I constantly find myself telling others that my nano is really smaller than it appears.

I would say definately no to any hard clear plastic case... dust and specs of 'sand' get inbetween the case and iPod and give it very fine scratches all over the place and it begins to get very easy to tell. At first it's all great but then, you'll realize it was a mistake. Stick with that invisible shield that was mentioned before. That looks incredibly promising. Then think about getting the leather case after you get that.

I have to agree with you about things getting in the case, and when I do notice the occasional faint scratch (usually on the back) but it's nothing compared to the scratches on my case. I've also dropped my ipod several times in the school parking lot, the case takes a lickin, but the nano keeps a tickin :D Nevertheless, for some people, a hard-case can be the best option, it is for me atleast. I'll also say this, I've read several reviews of products like the invisible shield and many have said that they're hard to put one perfectly and that you risk getting bubbles trapped under the shield. Not that that's always the case, just something to keep in mind.

The harder, the better

If you are carrying your iPod around a lot, a hard case will probably the best solution. Agent18 is nice but XtremeMac recently came up with a case that looks identical but with a big advantage: it comes with 2 backs - one with a belt clip, one without.

Here are Amazon links to the 30Gb model and 60Gb model.

I wonder if they are really selling the Apple Leather Case for iPod.
Something as dull as a case was introduced - and is taking almost as much time to get to market as the MBP.

My girlfriend thinks it's a anniversery gift from apple....
It you were dumb enough to plop $99 down for that insignificant thing, you are either DUMB, or on April 1st, anyone who ordered it will get it free from Apple as a gift. And then they will drop the price to $49 for anyone wanting one after the 1st.

Any thoughts on this, or why is this case such a mystery...

I quite like the holster style case, I had an iskin on my 20gig colour for a couple of months, but it took all the beauty of owning an ipod away, it made it thick, less sleek, i could have been carrying a Creative mp3 player or other:eek: since then ive been using it in an old 3G case, and it works fantastically. Its protected, but you still slide it out and get to hold it in your hand etc etc.

Otherwise, just use it, and when it breaks, buy a new one.

yes, IS is definitely the way to go. My brother didn't realize there was anything on my ipod at all when I showed him!

I got my leather iPod case on ebay. I love it.

It's not really bulky and it snaps shut magnetically. I don't worry about scratching because I never take it out of the case. You can fully access every aspect of the iPod, I don't even worry about the hold button. It comes with a detachable clip (awesome - I hate belt clips) And the quality it really good. I've never had a problem with it.

Plus it looks great.
The one show above isn't exactly the same, but it's really similar and it's made by Capdase, same as mine.
Best of all it's cheap, and like I said, it's good quality.

Wow...I was looking at that Invisible Shield. That is some tough stuff. I'm probably going to get some of that. Does it go all around the iPod, including the click wheel and around the bottom, top and sides? Can I use it with an iPod dock or other accessories that need the bottom connector?

I would like some padding for if I drop it though so it doesn't get a dent or something, like a really simple thin basic case. Any suggestions for that?

Thank you; I appreciate all your help.

What about the Marware Sportsuit Basic? It looks like it has padding on the sides. If it does, it seems perfect to go along with the Invisible Shield; the shield protects from scratches and dust, and the Sportsuit would just go around the edges and protect from falls. That a good idea?
