Okay. Lion sucks, and ML is still crappy. I would go back to SL, but thats a PITA. So much for it "Just Works"

Anyways here at my school, in Lion AND Mountain Lion, Apple changed something with the Wi-Fi settings. Randomly my Wi-Fi drops. Its not the computer or the schools's network, but OSX. Lion and ML do this. Because we are an Apple authorized repair center, we contacted the engineering department. They may send someone out, but why the **** can't they figure it out. It seems to be more stable with less users on the network, but Leopard and SL didn't give a damn about how many users were connected.

Console claims it disconnected due to inactivity. Well even if I have terminal ping Apple.com, it will still disconnect.

Its a HUGE PITA I can reconnect, and it will drop again. I have to reconnect about 70-90 times over the entire school day. We are trying to figure this out, but we can't. Incoming freshmen got MacBook Pros with Lion. They all have the issue. White unibody MacBooks, and every product with Lion or ML has this issue. It's not HW related.

If you take the .kext from SL, and delete Lion or ML's kext, and put SL's kext in place, then the issue is solved. But when there is a 10.8.x update, it breaks it, and things go downhill.

It dropped 5 times while I'm writing this. Also, when I'm taking a test in Moodle, and it drops, and I click next (forgot it dropped) I have to reload moodle, go back to the home page, and start over. Not so good in education there :apple:

Strangely enough, at home, Wi-Fi is fine. No issues. So it has to do with the way Lion and ML deal with the Wi-Fi here. I will ask the IT guy what the settings of the Wi-Fi is.

Also, why does ML seem to index Macintosh HD all the time. It kills my battery.

Also I did a fresh install. No luck.

What and why does Apple **** with things that doesn't need to be screwed up.

Lastly, I have the "Reopen windows when logging back in" unchecked. That works. However if I hold down the power button when it locks up, and start it back up, it reloads everything even though I had that box UN checked. Why is that?

When it does that I have to wait nearly a minute for the apps to reload, and its really sluggish. So then I have to do a regular restart.

Sorry for the rant, but this is getting really annoying. I can't even use this for school with out it being a pita.

What is your advice on the Wi-Fi issues and the restarting issues?

Back to SL. I know you don't want to but how long can you put up with this? Just be thankful you have a machine than can still run it.

I'm still using it. I've tried all the updates to ML and problems in the initial release are still there after 2 updates (and one minor one). I want to like Mountain Lion because I don't want to abandon the Mac platform once my MBP dies but really... it's getting harder to swallow all this crap.

My MBP running SL is coming close to 3 years... It's awfully close to EOL since ML is still going haywire...

Then you're screwed. My MBP isn't quite there yet but I'll be in the same boat soon enough.

I feel your pain. :(

Still running Snow Leopard here also...

Btw., it could be some kind of incompability with the wifi server/network at your school? Maybe press your school to update the firmwire in the wifi server? I'm just guessing here though... But, I agree, OSX isn't what it used to be. This whole issue you're experiencing is unecessary. Snow Leopard is such a smooth, streamlined and intuitive OS, Apple really dropped the ball with Lion and (to a lesser degree) Mountain Lion.

Here is a rought draft of my letter to Apple executives. WOuld be nice to hear back. Its going to Cook, Schiller, Cue, Federighi, and for the hell of it, Forstall.

To whom it may concern,

I am writing this on my and my school's behalf. I'm a Junior at xxxxxx (xxxxxxxx) OSX Lion and Mountain Lion (here on referred to as ML) repeatedly drops the Wi-Fi connection to the base station. Console claims it disconnected due to inactivity. Well even if I have terminal ping Apple.com, it will still disconnect. Leopard, and Snow Leopard do NOT have this issue. My computer was fine on 10.6! I use a Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13" I should point out that hardware has nothing to do with it. Same issue on the white unibody MacBooks, 15" MBP, iMac, Mac mini, etc.

Its a HUGE hassle, and is simply unacceptable. I can reconnect, and it will drop again. I have to reconnect about 70-90 times over the entire school day. The IT department is an Apple authorized repair center. We contacted software engineering, and they are clueless. They keep blaming the base station. Incoming freshmen got MacBook Pros with Lion. They all have the issue. White unibody MacBooks, and every product with Lion or ML has this issue. It's not HW related.

In conclusion, WHAT did you change in Lion/ML regarding the Wi-Fi configuration. I want to get to the point. Enough of wasting my time and the IT department's time. We can't afford to trouble shoot all day long and be shooting in the dark. Also, how do I disable to automatic restoration of windows in the event of a forced restart. Reopening the windows defeats the purpose of force restarting.

I hope to hear back from you shortly.

Regards,

We have done all that before contacting Apple. They told us to change the beacon refresh rate (probably for **** and giggles) No dice. They are supposedly going to send a guy out.

Probably not a good idea posting your contact info on a public place on the internet like that.

My opinion is that is a pretty unprofessional email. Likely won't get a response.

I agree, don't write overly long and emotional emails, and avoid verbosity. The shorter the message, the better and clearer it becomes.

Because any potentially lost work will be recovered in apps that support it. Otherwise, it would be lost. How often does OS X "lock up" on you? I've not had a version of Mac OS lock up since before Leopard (apart from kernel panics). OS X is designed not to lock up, so if it happens often then something is significantly wrong with your installation or hardware.

If you want any kind of response to your email, don't send them a slightly modified forum post. Most likely the issue really is with the school system. SL probably let something that was not right slide by while Lion and ML have more strict requirements. You haven't done enough research, from what you've described here, to pinpoint what is at fault (the OS or the router).

Hopefully someone from executive relations will contact you. They will probably feel your issue is best handled by a telephone conversation. Keep us posted.

What is your advice on the Wi-Fi issues and the restarting issues?

Given that none of the Lion or Mountain Lion machines I have access to have WiFi issues my best guess would be that it is an incompatibility between the operating system (drivers) AND the WiFi infrastructure at your school.

This is as close as I need to confirmation. It's the access points at your school causing the issue.

Without reinstalling Snow Leopard on your laptop, there's no way to say that ML is at fault. If anything, it seems like the school routers are to blame... especially if your wifi works fine at home.

Yes it is. We have the white unibody MacBooks running SL. They don't have any issues. We took several of them, slapped Lion, and now ML on them, and they have the same issue.

On Friday, Apple engineers came on campus to reproduce the issue. The got the issue noted, and are working on it. They may send an engineer from Cupertino out if they can't fix it.

I got an email from Chris Bell (Cooperate Executive Relations) He will make sure this is solved.

The engineers also confirmed the school's WiFi is set correctly, so the issue is on Lion/ Mountain Lion's end. We even have a student with a 15" Retina MBP with the issue, and they are getting the logs from him too.

I feel pretty confident this issue will be resolved.

The only thing that I'm experiencing is Spotlight reindexing. Started when I upgraded to ML and has happened in each update (.1 and 2.). I've tried repairing permissions and tried to delete/reset and files relating to Spotlight but it doesn't seem to work, maybe once every 1.5-2 weeks it'll reindex for no reason. Small annoyance but other than that, ML works pretty damn well on a 3-year old computer (Late-2008 MacBook Pro).

Very funny ^^^

/sarcasm/

Anyways, when Spotlight indexes, it kills battery. Yet another annoying bug here.

I really don't know why they dick around with a fine OS when they are drunk.:rolleyes:

And another thing -

I read some time ago Jonathan Ive was the project leader for SL. Just goes to show you - put someone brilliant in charge and you get a brilliant product.

Put a committee in charge and you get Lion and Mountain Lion.

Does Ive even have the technical skills to lead something like this? Seriously... I don't know. I've always thought his forte' was design.
