This is a rant. But stay with me.

The butterfly keyboard on my very expensive MBP is a serious problem. I bought a Chromebook so I could type comfortably and reliably on a lappable device. But that's not all of it.

I reported a serious iOS accessibility problem to them 18 months ago, after living with the problem for a year prior to that — and it's still not fixed. But that's not all.

iCloud documents will frequently just refuse to download to a device, for no apparent reason.
There is also no way to remove an individual iCloud document from a device which is a really sinister way to ensure you need to buy more storage capacity than necessary. Generally, their cloud services are abysmal compared to the competition.

iTunes and sync are a hot mess, and lack of user-friendliness is legendary, but you all knew that already.

There's probably more, like the touchbar that we don't need waste time ridiculing any further.

But here's the thing:

What sent me over the edge today was noticing how Apple is promoting paywalled news stories in Apple News, to promote their new subscription service. They took a lovely benefit of owning an iPad and turned it into an expensive torture device in order to convince me to give them $10 a month. (And the irony is I already pay for NYTimes and WaPo subscriptions, which are the two biggies that don't participate in their pay scheme.)

I used to think Apple cared about the user. I used to think they cared about my experience as a user. The vaunted "user experience" was their mantra. Now it's profits. I'm not saying Google is any better, but damn Apple. Can't you create shareholder value and still provide fair value to your users? Or at least services and hardware that work?

Apple has always been about profits, that is why their computers are 4 times the price of a PC with the same components. This isn't news.

I haven't had any issues with iCloud per se, but I tend to use OneDrive more as I have more space and it is free for me.

Haven't used iTunes in a long time, and I am betting that it will fall by the wayside eventually.

Touchbar is gimmicky....

As for the news, I find Apple lackluster with it all at best. I prefer to just go find it myself on the web and if you have subscriptions, you can still just do that. People have been trying to "merge" news outlets for a while now and none have been all that great. I feel you pain there, but it isn't anything to be over dramatic about in my opinion.

I hear you. It's been that way since Steve Jobs died.
I used to use iWork nearly exclusively except when 100% Excel or PowerPoint compatibility was mission critical. I remember friends switched to Macs after using iTunes on Windows because "it just worked".

Steve Jobs had a vision of making great tools that people'd buy and eventually Apple would make money.
Tim Cook has a vision of making money by milking every Tom, Dick, and Harry of every nickel and dime he can.

I still stick with Apple because of privacy and easy of use but I'd switch to something else in a heartbeat if something existed that was fully functional that didn't use anything from Amazon, Google, or Microsoft (except Office).

Yup, iWork was great. The version that allowed you to mix modules, to essentially do layout work and embed spreadsheets in the WP documents was seamless and beautiful.

I bought a flagship Windows laptop and returned it, looking for the thing to replace my MBP. But I'm still looking. A good Chromebook is quite good for about 70% of daily tasks, but that other 30% that needs dedicated apps is really important.
[doublepost=1555133855][/doublepost]I think my real beef -- or the thing that tipped me over the edge -- is Apple taking an existing thing (the free News service) and making it worse in order to make $5/mo from users.

If Apple spent as much effort making things work better as they do finding new revenue streams, the keyboards might work, the software bugs might be patched, and their cloud services might be more reliable.

They do care the user provided you don't use their specific service. :) The whole idea of New+ was to avoid the paywall, which is the reason you get hesitation between NYT and Washington post not wanting to move....

EIther way,if you have a paywall. you might be better off sticking "as is"

Mhmm. If Apple truly cares about the user experience and about creating a seamless news service, they could decide to care less about taking a 50% cut. Maybe if they took a ~20% cut they could get NYTimes and WaPo to join in, expand the audience, and help everyone. But if they want to put profits ahead of the ecosystem, then I'll vote with my ethics, and my wallet, in that order.

If you had that many problems in a personal relationship, it would be time to seriously think about ending it due to irreconcilable differences. Likewise, maybe it's time to end your relationship with Apple. It doesn't seem like you are trying to fix or accommodate your differences. You are in the lashing out phase.

LOL. Well I'm certainly in the "complaining to strangers in a bar" phase.
If my partner was willing to discuss things or make accommodations, it might be a different story. But it's like talking to a corporation, not a human being...

Let me just say that Apple was never my friend. They were and are a multibillion dollar corporation who's primary duty is to their owners (stock holders). I never took anything apple did personally, though I have been disappointed at times with various decisions or the quality of a given product.
