It connects the Mac to the router.

This rumor would change it so that it would connect the display.

I'm saying they could probably already do that through a firmware change, but it would only help for Ethernet, so I'm guessing they won't bother.

I see what you’re saying.

I think what this represents is a toe in the water that eventually results in a “display” that has a built in AppleTV. Apple probably won’t ever call it a television but that’s basically where they’re headed with this.

For the price Apple charge for these monitors it should probably have a full Apple TV built in.

The 27" Apple Cinema Display (a 1.099 € display back in 2011) still worked with Monterey and Apple Silicon Macs, but then Apple introduced a software update, and since then, adjusting the brightness isn't possible anymore. ;)

Four months after that, the new Apple Studio Display was released. 👀

So I'm looking to get a super expensive Studio Display now. But I'm already scared of that update that'll make my Studio Display only show green and blue pixels, but not the red ones …
Try download the app Lunar and see if it fixes it.

The current displays basically already have that capability, both have an A13 in them, easily capable of running everything.

I don't really care about the smart features. Ready to jump on an updated Studio Display with HDR and a better camera to pair with my mac mini and gaming monitor. My LG really doesn't look good with my mac mini.

I have more than a few monitors in my home and in my office that, with multiple inputs, are all more practical as a 'Home Display'.

Being able to switch between devices is a prerequisite for home use. I have large monitors around the house that can switch between the Cable TV input, Apple TV, Gaming, DVD players, Mac Mini connected to Plex server. etc.

I feel much the same, however much of the market, particularly the younger generations, are used to touch on pretty much everything (I think most Chromebooks have it and at least here in the U.S. they're endemic in the schools). So if they did add touch, it would be acknowledging where the market is...I'd still keep those fingers away from my clean display though. ;-)
For a laptop with a ****** trackpad or one that converts into a tablet I can understand a touch display, but for a desktop setup? My arms are getting tired just thinking about how unpracticable and unergonomic it would be to touch my 34" display. Even with my M1 iPad air with Apple Magic Keyboard I hardly touch the display, I only touch it when absolutely necessary :)

Apple is working on a new external monitor for Macs that also functions as a kind of smart home display while not in use, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

Writing in the subscriber version of his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says that Apple is developing multiple new monitor offerings, some of which are likely to be successors to its Studio Display and Pro Display XDR, and one that could have smart standby features powered by an onboard iOS chip.

If Gurman's claim is accurate, it would not be the first time Apple silicon has been used in an external display. Apple already includes a dedicated A13 chip in its existing 27-inch Studio Display, but its functionality is limited to handling camera and speaker features like Center Stage and spatial audio when the display is in use.

Using an iOS device chip to power independent smart features when a monitor is idle would be an evolutionary next step, and could possibly rely on an expanded version the new Standby feature in iOS 17, which turns a charging iPhone in horizontal orientation into a home hub with full-screen widgets. As for when we could see the smart monitor, Gurman says not to expect a release until 2024 "at the earliest."

If Steve Jobs would be alive he would make great displays definitely. Apple still insisting of launch 27 inch 5k. We had to see 36 42 inches already. As resolution increase on screen everything getting smaller so in order to not stuck on smaller size screens Apple move it to bigger ones. In 2023 still 27 inch ? Like a joke. Who take these decisions in Apple ? It is same for imac too. What is 24 inch ? They had to make 32 inch imac already. They do not think creative and focus on too much marketing rather than being creative which how Apple makes difference others ... Think different ( like Steve Jobs ) !!! More customer focused and more creative
