So, it looks like it will be another 3 weeks for Apple to issue another fix for the flickering screen problem, according to AI:

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...fix_for_flickering_27_inch_imacs_reports.html

"Soon after Apple delayed shipments of its big screen 27-inch iMac, various users have begun to report from AppleCare technicians that a second fix for screen flickering affecting the hardware is due within 3 weeks.

In a thread on the Apple Discussions forums that spans nearly 250 pages, users have begun to report conversations with AppleCare representatives who claim a new update is forthcoming. A month ago, Apple released a software fix for the flickering issue on the 27-inch iMac, but since then users have said it did not address the problem."

Well my i7 which was susposed to be delivered tomorrow has just changed status to "returned to apple". On the UPS site it is "SERVICE DISRUPTION OCCURRED / SHIPPER REQUESTED RETURN OF PACKAGE".

Interestingly I had two packages and only the 17.5 kilo one (obviously the imac) has this status.

Oh and the apple store is closed now so I cant ask them whats going on grrr.

Nice to know it got all the way from Shanghai to the UPS depot round the corner before being pulled back though :D

So is this a recall?

I think Apple is threading very carefully at the moment, since they are about to release quarterly financial results very soon. Official recall right now would be very disruptive, even admitting higher than normal failure rate could be harmful.
But technically you are probably right, since they recalled your computer...

If your delivery fell 20 feet onto the tarmac and the box was caved in, I doubt that would lead to a mass recall of all in-transit iMacs.
Perhaps you'd have been less suspicious if the status read "NO SERVICE DISRUPTION DESPITE BADLY SMASHED PACKAGE / SHIPPER REQUESTED DELIVERY OF PACKAGE ANYWAY"

The delivery obviously suffered a mishap in-transit. How does that translate into a political thriller involving quarterly financial results and failure rate cover-ups?

if it suffered a mishap...why would the shipper request it back ?

your theory does not make sense.

If a substantial package you sent became externally and obviously damaged in transit, they'd inform you. You'd then ask them to return it, or deliver it anyway. Why does that not make sense?
In those circumstances, would you prefer a Fedex clerk make the decision for you, without informing you and seeking your decision?

Apple has in the past done mass recalls of items that were in the delivery system. For reasons know only to Apple.

I don't think Apple is making any secrets about the delays in shipment for the 27 inch iMac. Anyone can see that it says "Ships: 3 Weeks" on the online Apple Store. Corporate clients with UPS have an intercept system that allows them to have packages en route sent back to to the shipper for a fee. The only thing that is yet open for speculation is the exact reason for these delays.

It is not a recall either, obviously. Not yet, anyway. A recall would be a request to all those who have purchased the iMacs and taken delivery to return them for repair/replacement. As mentioned Apple is preparing another firmware update to fix it supposedly.

If the next firmware fix doesn't cure the vast majority of flickering iMacs then I could see a recall for the affected machines becoming a possibility.

iMacs week 03 anybody?

Just wondering, did anybody get a week 03 27" iMac yet?
I was checking iMac Issues site and for a long time the latest production week stopped at 02.
Just curious, did they stop shipments or something?

How did you know? Have you experienced like that before and got a call from them?

I was at an authorized Apple reseller in North America today.
The clerk told me they haven't received new i5s in 3 weeks.

He also added in a little naive way that after that happens they usually get new improved machines. I highly doubt this is the case since it's not even 2 months since they have been released.
This tells me that nobody, including the stores know what's going on, unless they take the info from here to know just a little more.

So Apple say they don't know why it is being returned and there is nothing on their system.

UPS say Apple asked them to return it and wont send it to me until Apple tell them to.

Apple say they already did that... brilliant.

BTW: This is a week 3 machine going on the serial on the invoice.

My 8 day old i5 started flickering yesterday and I ended up with the bottom 1/4 of the screen at the top of the monitor.
Contacted applecare and they told me that something was being worked on and I'd be contacted within 3 weeks and told how they would be progressing, there was no mention of if it was a software or hardware fix.

My external monitor is as good as gold when the flicker is occuring which is very frustrating.
