According to an AppleCare employee there was an article posted about the issue for employees stating that the software fix for the flickering that some users [including me!] are still experiencing after the display firmware update 1.0 being released in 3 weeks is also supposed to solve the yellowing of the display.

I don't understand how that's possible- for software to fix what clearly seems like a hardware issue, but she was reading the article as she was on the phone with me.

She also said if I'm still experiencing the issue after the update I am able to just get an LCD replacement, which would be fine by me. I'd rather that than replace a machine that's otherwise perfect and doesn't have the HDD noise issues or anything.

I thought this was curious. Either way, Apple's customer was great as usual and she was very helpful, so here's hoping Apple found some way to fix the issue via software! That'd definitely be ideal.

Re: Yellow Tint

Well, that conflicts with what I've been told. Apple sales rep states that the screen had bad "chemicals" - alluding to a hardware issue, which clearly can't be remedied with a software patch.

It could, to a degree, if they were to have some sort of way to calibrate the effected areas of the display and add a degree of blue to it to soft fix it.

Not likely

I was told by executive relations today that the LCD panels would be replaced in 3 weeks.

I think the panels are defective.

Does this mean the next batch shipping in 3 weeks (feb 16) will be fixed from this yellow nightmare? I hope so. It'll be my 4th one.

No it does not mean that

It just means that in 3 weeks they will be replacing the panels for anyone that complains of the problem.

That says nothing about when the shipping units will get the good panels.

Apple said that in 3 weeks they may have more information, but that is all they provided me with.

She said it is best to keep my machine and wait.

After 3 weeks Apple will contact me to either replace the panel or replace the machine once confirmed that the shipping machines are no longer effected.

There is no software fix for this. You people are hilarious. It's a HARDWARE "issue," through and through.

How am I hilarious? I stated in my original post that it seemed strange to me that she said there was going to be a software fix. These aren't my words they're an AppleCare employee's, and it's TRUE that they COULD do some form of calibration on the affected areas of the display, IE adding more blue to counteract the yellow, since almost universally it's only been the lower half of the screen that has displayed the issue.

The yellow is all over the place. In my last swap the tinge was vertical and covered more or less 2/3 of the screen. the left 1/3 was white/cool, the rest was yellowish/warm. I don't know how they would figure out exactly what parts or even "spots" are off.

if the yellowness is caused by a bug in firmware, then it is possible to fix it with a software update.

you don't know what causes the problem, so how could you possibly know that a software update couldn't fix the issue?

I know because it's not the whole screen that's yellow. It's a cast in various parts of the screen, and not everyone has the same cast, or a cast at all! It's panel variance. I'll repeat it till I'm blue in the face: PANEL VARIANCE.

I think you may be right. It is possible the firmware case has been ruptured and loose bits are leaking down the screen, causing pixel discoloration.

Yes, that could be it (slowly eases backward toward the door...)
