Now that the Pro Video guys have been wooed (tiny market) with the new Mac Pro, it’s time now to build a tower Mac Midi Pro for the ‘rest of us’, a much larger market.

The Mac Pro has the Intel Xeon W-3265 (24-core) @ $4500
Hrm, big issue here. Apple got caught with their pants down big style me thinks.
Probably just bad timing because planing and development of the Mac Pro started some years ago, so this is understandable. One must wonder if was possibly properly evaluate AMD’s roadmap to plan and develop, maybe not.
Looking at the single thread and multithread performance rankings at passmark, we see Apple now go themselves into a price/performance corner.
Any Pro paying 6K+ for that Mac Pro with the CPU upgrade costs to the 24/28 core Xeon is gona be painful and you’d have to be off your head to pay so much for such weak performance.
Considering the most logical CPU’s for a potential Mid sized Mac Pro, ie half the size, half the PCIe slots and half the price are:
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X (24-core) @ $1340
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X (32-core) @ $1907
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X (64-core) @ $TBD
Any of these 3 going to resolutely annihilate all of the Intel CPU’s available in the Mac Pro for even probably the next two years.
Intel have nothing on the roadmap to match AMD desktop Threadrippers, if and when they do have something to compete there will be a CPU socket change requiring a new logic board, Mac Pro owners are gonna be bitching.
Anyway, thanks to all the deep pockets, you guys are going to pay for the R&D for the Mac Pro.
Lets hope this helps Apple and the ‘rest of us’ bring a more sensible sized and priced Mid sized Mac Pro with AMD Threadripper CPUs with 4 x PCIe 4.0 slots and PCIe NVME SSDs, and upgrade the Mac Pro next year to AMD EPYC Workstation class platform, there’s probably 128 core coming next year.
