Is Apple not holding a January event this year as they have in years past? Seems like they usually have an event that coincides with CES, however I have not heard anything. Wonder what gives, as it seems a very usual thing...

Apple hasn't had a January event since the launch of the iPad 1 in 2010 (unless you count the education event in 2012 for iBooks textbooks), so I don't think there is a precedent for them to hold one.

They used to attend Macworld SF which was in January but that hasn't been the case for, what, 10 years, more?

I feel like just about all of the events i've seen for Apple are related to Steve Jobs' birthday, not really anything more.
