I believe that Apple killed the iPod classic by introducing the 2nd gen. There are virtually no posts about the classic anymore (just the nano:() Apple killed it without killing it. How hard would it be to put the 250GB in the classic and bring it back to life?

iPod classic: Sept. 5, 2007- Sept. 9, 2008

Did you consider the fact that the reason there are no posts is because people are satisfied with their products? In my experience on these boards, people generally don't come on and say anything about the products unless A) there's a problem, or B), they just bought it (and are happy/not with it). I'm pretty sure if someone came on and said, Oh Boy! I've been using my iBook since 2002 and it sure is great! the thread would be largely ignored (though you would have a handful of people alternatively flaming them for using PPC with several others congratulating them for the same).

It's probably because it's the classic. It's the same old thing as usual. Nothing special just regular ol ipod

How hard would it be to put the 250GB in the classic and bring it back to life?

250 (or is it 240?) wasn't available at the release time and probably isn't still.

By the way, they didn't kill Classic. They improved the 80 gig model and removed (probably for time) the thicker 160 GB model. What else could they do?

I know a lot of people who would rather buy Classic than any other iPod, so no, Classic isn't dead.

Okey dokey, let's go.
I have a brand new Classic 160 and I love, love, love it!
My previous iPod was a 5g 60 that served me well for almost three years. It has been used day in day out for hours almost every day; it's been dropped from chest height onto concrete several times(I'm not clumsy but when one takes a full size ipod out every day for years and continually takes it out to add songs to on-the-go's, well, the law of averages does indeed stipulate that it's gonna hit the concrete a fair few times! But it's never not once paused, hiccupped or asked to be given a rest. Not built to last?! I beg to differ!
I loved it!
Things move on. My music collection soared past 60, 80 and then 100 giggeroo's. What to do? Well, the 160 had already been out a good while so I thought, why not wait for the capacity increase come September? That I did.
And then the disappointment. 120? Nope, not good enough. If the 160 really did not shift the units then fair enough, but I don't think it's that simple. Regardless, that's where we are right now. I needed more than 120; I had just given my father my 60'er as a birthday gift pre-loaded with a little music from his era(and oh my God is he not like a little boy in a sweet shop, and, incidentally, it is amazing just how many older folks have no idea what an iPod is, and on being shown one, gawp in open-mouthed astonishment(his friends!)).
So, I have no iPod for the first time in three years and suddenly finding myself lacking a limb. I was also, unexpectedly, finding myself with not enough money to buy even an 8g Nano! However! Girlfriend and parents, upon accurately assessing my turmoil, stumped up the monies to help me plump for a brand new 160; nearly full price but what the heck - of the four stockists that still had it, the sum total came to nine units and only one black, so, purchase!
And I have to say, just in case I haven't already, that I love this thing!
And that I feel, and believe, that Apple will make a rare bad move if they do indeed, as some folks feel, kill off the Classic once the solid state drives equal the Classics capacity and come down in price.
I don't know, things change, they have to. But there's something prescious about this device. Really! This clickwheel is something very special indeed. I mean, I know the Touch is in many ways a wondrous creation, and the interface is fabulous, but I still feel that the clickwheel interface, for music usage alone I suppose, beats it hands down. And this is the rub; I only want an iPod for music!
To digress slightly, I am kinda surprised that there isn't an option(is there?)to have a virtual clickwheel pop up on the Touch's screen, for those that would still quite like to have that interface when just listening to music.
Anyway, back to the Classic, as you no doubt know by now, I love everything about this machine. The form factor: why is thinner the holy grail at the moment with Apple? I love the weight, the heft, of the Classic, and the fact there is a little room to manoeuvre when using it(new Nano just too cramped for me), and actually think the Touch 2G could do with being a little thicker!
And as for the numerous stories of 160's stalling mid-song, well, all I can say is that this one has been faultless. If anything, it's operation is even more fast 'n fluid than my old 5G. The metal front feels and looks better(again, to me)than the plastic 5G and in general it just feels nicer to use.
One last point, both a negative and a positive.
I make playlists. Long playlists. I cannot tell you how much it used to annoy me that when listening to a long playlist, one couldn't know who all the individual artists were until actually playing them. Only the song titles were listed. Of course, this has since been addressed, and now, when listening to a playlist, as I was today, with almost 200 songs on it, I can see who all the artists are, right there under song title!
It feels as though the iPod has just learnt that the Earth is not in fact flat!
But why oh why don't Apple backdate these improvements? I see no reason for this. Why deny owners of previous models the obvious benefits that improvements such as this bring, except for petty-minded inclinations.
Nevertheless, to sum up, I, Love, My, iPod, Classic!
And yeah, I think it's days are numbered.
And yeah, I think Apple should look at it anew, and increase it's screen size as they further increase it's hard drive(yes, meaning keeping it thick!), and yes, upping it's cool factor by perhaps releasing a 100% black anodised(back & front)model. But we know that's not going to happen unfortunately.
Is this the last Classic? Let's hope not. But if it is(and maybe 120 really is enough for most)then it's going out as, for many, the best iPod bar none.
When I go out, all I want is the music. Nothing else.
For those that want any or all of the extras that the Touch offers, well, they have the best device going.
For me, and maybe a few others, with the Classic we have the best!
Long live the new flesh!
Long live the Classic.

Never in my life will i read this post. Never.

Not because of the colors, but that is the most blobbish, ugly, without-format post i have ever seen. And exceeds my "I dont know this person, therefor i do not trust them, therefor their ridiculously long post is 99% sure to be worth nothing to me" rule.

No one in this thread has yet mentioned that 1.8" drives with a capacity higher than 200GB won't be available until 2009.

Really, just the name says it all. Classic. Apple is moving to multi-touch ipods. The click wheel will remain in the flash based ipod nano. Apple has been known to shift aggressively, like they did (to a certain extent) when they decided not to release 64-bit Carbon layers. Or when it dropped support for PPC computers with Snow Leopard.

why are there so many people on these forums that have no clue about the history of the ipod lines?

I saw a thread titled "mockup for 4th gen classic"

my classic was a 5.5g and that was over a year ago. I beleive we are on the 6th or 6.5th (depending on what you consider a new generation to be)

The op said this was the 2nd gen, i LOLed

The iPod classic is the 6th generation of full sized iPod.

80GB, 120GB and 160GB iPod classics all belong to the same generation. The 120GB isn't a second generation of iPod classic.

I'm with Carl on this one...my 160 is a gem, for sure. I have a (don't have any idea what the hell generation it is) 20gig, B/W screen, I think it was the true 2nd gen when they had the 10/20 choices? Anyway, irrelevant. It is still in my truck, under the dash with about 7000 songs on a proprietary connector to an Eclipse deck. My truck is 5 years old. It's been there since the beginning and NEVER faulted. It was almost 2 years old when I put it there:) Works great, everything on it.

I bought the 160 when the Itouch came out...both because of capacity and the nostalgia of the piece. Funny though, how different the 5th gen is than the 2nd gen. Night and Day. No video, no cover art, no Genius:)

I dig the classic. I have an Iphone as well. And the funny thing, I don't use the phone for storing music...I do use a couple of apps for internet radio, but not "as an Ipod." Even with the capabilities of the Touch...>I prefer to listen to music on my Classic;)

.... which you just made worse by quoting the entire thing! It's a good idea to snip long posts so you only quote the specific sections that you're responding to.

Whilst I am one of those that consider it to be on it's 6/6.5 generation, in a way the OP is correct, as it is the 2nd iteration of this iPod since it became officially known as the "classic".

Apple won't kill what sells. I think the Classic still sells pretty well, but the Nano is the top seller.

I don't think the click-wheel iPods have much life left in them at all. Maybe there's a big group of people that loves the simplicity, but I can't stand the click-wheel after buying an iPhone. It's kinda like adding a mouse to a computer.

I think at some point Apple will kill the Classic and just make an iPod Touch that's thicker and can use those small hard drives. IMO, the Classic's ONLY advantage is the storage space. The iPhone/iPod Touch screens are so much more rugged than my 5th gen iPod that it's amazing.

Of course Apple could ditch the Classic and use only flash, but they would probably need a 128GB iPod Touch before that could happen. I don't think 64GB flash chips exist yet, so I think the top would be 64GB (which you will probably see early next year).

Apple IMO would love to kill the Classic, but doesn't because there is still profit and demand for it. As such it's like every other player out there that hasn't had some "news" about it for a year. The forums crawl to a stop. People have said and read everything they can about it, so move on to other things. Apple is no dummy, though. If there was suddenly a potential for HUGE profit in a large capacity player, they would suddenly have a new one for us to buy, with enough visible and functional change to keep the forums buzzing for another 9 months or so. I personally expect to see a new arched/curved front non-touch iPod from Apple within a year. Curved just enough to match the natural shape of your rear jeans pocket. iPod Curve, perhaps. 120gb static ram. $349.

A 120GB SSD costs more than $349!

I think you guys are taking me to literally. When I said that Apple killed the iPod classic, I meant it figuratively. Of course the iPod classic is still for sale, but in my mind, it's dead. The whole reason I loved the classic was for its huge memory. I don't care how thick it is. I can handle a few more mm if it means I can get 130GB more. and yes, Toshiba released a 240GB, then within a few weeks, they topped themselves by introducing a 250GB 1.8" HDD. I really hope Apple comes to their senses and adopts the new drive.

Not going to happen, and here's why. Apple is going to drop the ipod classic once flash gets higher capacity/cheaper. Probably when 128 GB flash is reasonably priced. Then they can introduce the 128 GB touch as the new top of the line and rather than having far less capacity than the classic it's killing off, it will actually have 8 GB more space. Clever marketing, I must say.

"Not going to happen, and here's why."

You work for Apple, Cassidy? As SS memory gains capacity, so will HDD. I don't see the end to strive for higher capacities in both directions. IF this is the case, it will be a while before SSD reaches the same capacity of its HDD counterparts.

Making such "absolute" statements is silly IMO...unless, of course, you work for Apple:)

excuse shortening your name sir but you've expressed my sentiments and more of the black 160 iPod Classic I also have, and i could care less about some silly feature like "genius" b.s. being added to the pods- hell if you can't take the time to do that yourself--and hell that was part of the structured fun in owning a pod....i hope that if these small drives get bigger that Apple continues onward with the Classic.....and speaking of enclosed batteries like the pod line have---has anyone ever thought of encasing a rechargeable battery into the Apple Mac mini?. I know that they have said-or someone did--I think- that the next mini would be 1/2 the size it is now--so that drops the enclosed rechargeable idea....and i also don't not particularly give a F%$# if someone doesn't spell rite or not or doesnt sentence the punkchewation right..if you can get the idea across that's all dats kneaded and your use of colours is also great. I had thought the original iPod was going to be what is now the iTouch or the other way around(???) and I then also had thought the iTouch would have had a greatly larger HD....I'm not as computer skilled as so many of you are out there...and you all contribute something to learn from all around Apple products.....and as much as I wish I could afford other Apple products, I like all I have bought except for one thing and I already mentioned a reason.....I bought Leopard, did an erase and install after putting the relevant data on an external HD..and immediately saw some things I didn't need to use and or didn't like such as stacks and some others but mainly I did not like what Apple did to its "security"
arrangement---now before you jump on me remember I already said I don't have the computer skill level so many of you have...and I just could not figure out how to make Leopard's security level as good as Tigers is...so I uninstalled Lep and did an erase and install for Tiger. Unfortunately no one has or else i just don't know they have written a step by step "how to click and click your Leopard to a max security level" MAYBE SOME DAY WILL COME WHERE A GENERIC APPLE IPOD/ITOUCH CLASSIC WILL COME BY WHERE YOU COULD PUT IN THE DRIVE YOU WANTED LIKE THEY HAVE WITH THE MACBOOKS and/or THE BATTERY....
