This article is about Dell expanding their AMD offerings, but towards the bottom of the article, it mentions that Apple and Lenovo are going to be 1st in line to get Merom chips. No one else will get volumes anywhere near what Apple & Lenovo will get, a main reason why Dell looking to AMD. Perhaps we'll see new MBP's by September? I haven't come across anything indicating the exact release date for Merom in August, but if it's early enough, we could see an announcement at WWDC...

Then I might just wait for Merom, knowing Apple will be among the first to get them :).

apple likes to produce a large volume of macs before shipping, so dont be suprised if it's still a while before apple ships a merom macbook/MBP

Just the news I want to hear.

Question:

If Apple were to plonk Merom in the MB, would it have to use Intel's new graphics chipset (GMA X3000 or something) because of motherboard compatibility, or can it continue to use the crappy current one?

I'd buy a MacBook with this new graphics chipset, but not right now, and MacBook Pros are just too big.

Merom should be able to run just fine using the chipset that Yonah currently uses. Still, here's to hoping for the X3000.

The Yonah chipset will be "refreshed" for Merom and provide an improved memory interface, but it will otherwise be the same (graphics, etc.). The x3000 graphics don't come until the Santa Rosa chipset, which is currently slated for March '07.

Eh? The GMA X3000 is just the new name for the G965 integrated video chipset from Intel. It's the integrated solution for Core 2 Duo.

well, I'm really happy about this! as an audio guy/web designer, i could care less about the video card. in my crazy fantasy world, intel is betrayed by everybody except for apple and IBM, er, lenovo, and everyone else goes to AMD, and apple and IBM merge, and apple is special and differentonce again. the scary part is that this is totally possible.

This is only very slightly surprising. I suppose Intel is banking a bit on an increase in Apple's market share? But what about HP, aren't they closing in on Dell a little bit? Of course, Apple could be just putting up more cash.
