Apple logo in the corner of the screen?

I was getting all worried that something was wrong with my LCD because I noticed a white-ish patch on the right side of the screen. It looked like something had leaked into the front diffuser at the edge and was slowly spreading out.

Then my friend was over and said "Hey, what's with the Apple logo" and I suddenly realized what I was actually seeing was the left half of the logo. Phew, I guess.

Is this supposed to be there? Is there a way to turn it off? In darker scenes it's quite distracting.

No, I was watching a rented movie. IIRC, now I'm doubting myself...

you don't get a white apple logo on movie rentals or purchsed content, but you do get them on the trailers.
