I just got this keyboard; https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Keyboard-Numeric-Wireless-Rechargable/dp/B071ZZTNBM/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=3LHXTCJ3J1GOR&keywords=apple+magic+keyboard&qid=1667001922&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI0LjQzIiwicXNhIjoiMy43NSIsInFzcCI6IjMuMDkifQ==&sprefix=apple+magic+keyboard,aps,157&sr=8-1-spons&ufe=app_do:amzn1.fos.f5122f16-c3e8-4386-bf32-63e904010ad0&psc=1, in space gray, but it is this same one.

I tired to connect it via the lightening cable, but nothing. I have bluetooth turned on, tried turning on and off, but nothing.

When i look in preferences bluetooth, there is just a little spinning wheel, and then it just goes away and then nothing.

Does this keyboard work with cMP 5,1 machines? I am running 10.13.6 High Sierra.

I liked it because of the darker color, and wider control F keys along the top.

Edit, I found the switch on the top of it, and switched it, to on now it seems to work. But I would like to rename it, it is under someone else's name, (I got it new from eBay) how do i do that? do I have to wait until it is fully charged?

Yes, helps to turn it on 😉 Not sure if it's different in High Sierra, but in Ventura, I just go to System Settings (for you it will be System Preferences) > Bluetooth, and then click the "i" next to the device you want to rename. Rename it and click "Done".

The usb to lightning only powers the unit, it doesn’t connect it. Bluetooth is the only way, and yes it should work on a 5,1 even with original Bluetooth installed.

I have the silver version working on High Sierra, both bluetooth and wired, along with the current USB-c braided cable of the magic trackpad.

The on/off switch is for the device as a whole, it's not related to bluetooth. Switch it off, and connect via cable, it still won't work.

Only problem with it, one of them causes a failed / hanging wake requiring a restart if Little Snitch is active on wake, when the devices are cabled.

That's actually incorrect, when it's cabled it communicates via the cable. It only uses bluetooth when it isn't cabled direct to the Mac. I'm typing right now on one, with bluetooth switched off, and the keyboard cabled in.
