Apple Mail: Can't Change Fonts & Colors

I've tried to change the default Font & Color of email messages in Apple Mail, but it won't let me. I "Select" a new size, font, and color, but the changes won't take affect. Anyone else experiencing this?

I fixed it myself by Repairing Permissions and restarting the computer. Worked.

I have the exact same problem: unable to change default font style of email since I installed Yosemite. Never had this problem before. Really frustrating.

Could you explain how you Repair Permissions? I really need to change my default font in Mail as well.

How were you able to do that? I took someone else's advice and seem to have made my problem WORSE!! They said to go to ~/Library/Preferences and look for a file called com.apple.mail-shared.plist and delete the file and it should restore everything back to normal.
Well other people on that forum were saying it worked like a charm! Well, in my case, I couldn't find it, so I typed ~/Library/Preferences into my internet search bar, and clicked on com.apple.mail-shared.plist and it downloaded the file... so I immediately trashed it! Well now I don't even get the OPTION of changing the default color! OH NO!!! My SN is literal... I'm not mac savvy at ALL!!!
