My Apple Mail has three “categories” of folders along the left side of the screen: Favorites, rochester.rr.com (Email address server name), and On My Mac. A number of folders are repeated in each of the three areas, e.g., Drafts, Trash.

Why are there three groupings of folders, and how can I combine them into one listing?

That's the standard organization of Mac Mail. It's a feature. You can't merge them. But you can control what's in each category.

It's just a matter of learning what those items are and figuring out how you want to use them. Doing a search on the Internet should be your first choice for finding answers before asking questions.
