I'm on ios 18 and looks like that my Gmail messages are not receiving notifications when using Apple Mail app.

Also, when I open the Apple Mail, messages takes time to sync or download.

Now I'm using Outlook for iOS and that appears more promising.

Has anyone experienced delays on Apple Mail who has a Gmail account with downloading messages or no notifications?

Which would be the most reliable between the two? Apple Mail or Outlook? If Outlook then I will stick to Outlook app.

Yes, I have same issue, with no mail notifications showing up. Once I open mail app I can see emails that have been received but I haven’t opened yet.
Maybe it’s related to me turning off/not starting the email categories thing in recent update?

Same issue. Deleting Gmail account and setting it up again fixes for a bit. Until it doesn’t. Numerous other fixes attempted with same results. Multiple reports in apple feedback from others.

Despite using the List view (i.e. turning Categories off) I found there's a bug in Mail's notification settings.

Go into Settings / Notifications / Mail / Customise Notifications

and ensure "All unread Messages" is selected. This fixed the notifications issue for me; I hope it does for others.

So many stock apps have fundamental issues when you don't use them as one person in Apple has decided it should be used. "Don't use Categories? Here's a bug, because I never turned Categories off and did no further testing". /rant.

Nope not a fix that works for me.

I am not getting new mail notifications for iCloud mail on my watch when mail arrives. I get the red badge notification on my phone. On the other hand, Canary has been working as Apple Mail is supposed to and isn’t.

Thanks -- that worked for me!

The reason I will stick with Outlook app because it supports Push notifications especially for Gmail accounts. Push is much better and faster than Fetch.

Apple Mail for Gmail is only Fetch which is the result of the notification delays. Apple Mail doesn't support Push notifications for Gmail accounts.

I have been frustrated with the mail app badge count never being correct, nor updating. Today I may have figured out how to fixed it. Since apple added categories, which I don’t care for and have turned off, it has not worked. Go to SETTINGS, NOTIFICATIONS, MAIL, CUSTOMIZE NOTIFICATIONS AT THE BOTTOM OF SCREEN, and my settings had only the “unread message in primary” checked off. I changed that to “All unread messages” and it works perfectly so far.

Thanks to all for the comments.

Can someone please post a screenshot for these settings?

I also have an issue with Gmail taking some time to download or sync all my new messages in Apple Mail.

Outlook app somehow doesn't do this because maybe it uses Push notifications instead of Fetch.

Does not work, I tried the steps posted from the screenshot. For Gmail accounts, looks like that Apple Mail only supports Fetch notifications. I will use Outlook instead.

Also noted here in this article:

The Apple Mail app can’t push new notifications from the added Gmail account or most other email services. Push is only supported by iCloud, Outlook, and a few other services.

Sorry it’s not working for you. It is flawlessly working for me now.

Maybe your not using a Gmail account in your case.

My question was related specifically for those who are using a Gmail account.
I do have a Gmail account but it only gets emails when I order fast food. I sent myself a test message to the Gmail acct and it popped up as a badge no issues.

Mine gets the notification badges after I open the Mail app itself which is not practical to me. I need the notification that comes instantly even without having to open the Mail app.

Like I said. It's not Apple Mail that's at fault here. Rather, Gmail on Apple Mail doesn't support Push notifications. That's the issue here.

Do you get the notifications eventually? In other words, if you wait for 15 minutes (or whatever the Fetch interval is set for) without opening Mail, do you get notifications then?

I have a few email providers, none of which (apart from iCloud) support Push. I get notifications, but not immediately. One test for you could be to turn the phone off (or airplane mode), send yourself some emails, then turn the phone back on again. You should get the notifications within a few seconds of the phone connecting to the net.

If you do, then you're right, it's just a consequence of Fetch emails where the phone will have no idea you have any new mails until the Fetch is run. That's how it works for me. However, if you still don't get notifications then this does sound like an iOS bug rather than a Google one.

Apple’s IOS mail app has not worked properly with Gmail accounts for a few years since google stopped allowing push to iOS mail from google. Google mail app and Outlook app both work as they should. I just don’t like either because of their overall functionality/design.

I have mine set to Fetch and under it set as Automatically on the Apple Mail app. It's set as Automatically with no time intervals.

I only receive the emails right after I go to my Inbox but with no notifications.

I think "automatic" means it only checks when either (a) you open the Mail app or (b) the phone's charging and connected to WiFi. If it only discovers you've got new mails when you open the Mail app, there's no point in it giving you notifications, as you already know 😁

Try changing it to the shortest duration, which I think is 15 minutes.

I'll try the suggestion as noted above.
So I have for Gmail set as Fetch then interval time set to 15 minutes. Let's see what happens.

This worked. Thank you.

15 minutes time interval is not that big of a deal to me since I rarely get emails.

So looks like I'll be removing the Outlook app.

I wasn't getting any email Notification sounds on Mail when using three POP3 accounts and two IMAP accounts (one of which is a Gmail account). I was getting visible Notification badges but that didn't help if I wasn't looking at my phone.

I decided to migrate Gmail and Yahoo (both IMAP) to the Spark App, while leaving my POP3 accounts under the Mail App. Now all email accounts receive Notifications and their respective sounds.

I have a different variation of this problem. I have a MacBook Air. When my iPhone is in the same room as the MacBook, I get no iPhone mail notifications. I keep the sound off on the MacBook - so I get no sound notifications. If I'm out of the house so not close to MacBook I do get mail notifications. It is as if the MacBook is given notification priority .
