I was looking up Mail problem posts and didn't quite find one like this. Since I updated MacOS Sequoia, Apple Mail has become very slow to load new messages and it seems to be getting slower. For the last few months, it might take a minute after I opened Mail for it to download my new messages. Now, for the last few days, it's taking 5+ minutes to download and display new messages. I am not running a VPN or Private Relay. I have a fast internet connection. Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this? Thanks.

I'm experiencing the same issues. I thought Mail was corrupted or something but eventually it finally downloaded..This is crap !!

Same with me, using Fastmail IMAP. Thought something was weird with my connection, so I deleted and re-added the mail account. Left Mail open for a day or two and still has barely progressed at downloading my messages.

Suddenly today (the 14th) it has sped back up to normal speed. Have any of you noticed this?

If you DON'T have any POP accounts or emails stored in folders under "On My Mac", the best way to start over with your mail accounts is to turn "Mail" off for all your accounts, delete everything in the ~/Library/Mail folder (the invisible Library folder in your user account), and then re-add the accounts.

I've seen moved on to using the native FastMail web interface, which is quite good and incredible fast. That and Outlook for my work email, which not terrible but not terrific. I'll give it a few months.

Came here to add that I have same problem. I just upgraded to the new Mac Mini M4 and installed Sequoia and my mail hangs. I have GMail, Fastmail, and iCloud mail connected to it. I do this so I can time machine all of my saved mail.

Same – I use Fastmail and have tried so many mail apps over the years. Mail.app was amazing back in the day (Tiger – Snow Leopard). I tried moving back because the Fastmail UI (which is extremely fast and functional) doesnt' work offline. And I'm looking forward to the inbox categories (which Fastmail lacks). But WTAF??This thing can't even fetch mail or move messages to folders efficiently? Incredibly disappointing.

Anyone have any updates? I'm on 15.2 release version but don't mind trying betas…

I had similar issues... emails taking over 5 minutes to appear, and the actual content taking even longer to load. I escalated the issue with Apple Support four times, but they couldn’t find a solution.

Out of desperation, I installed Thunderbird, thinking it might be a problem with Mac Mail, but the same issue occurred. That led me to suspect it was a mailbox configuration issue.

My main email account was set up as an Exchange/IMAP/POP account, while my secondary was just IMAP/POP. I usually configure all my email accounts in Mac Mail using the “Other Mail Account” option with IMAP.

As a test, I deleted my main account and re-added it using the “Microsoft Exchange” setup option. That completely resolved the issue, it now works like a dream. The other non-Exchange account is still slow, but at least my main email is back to normal.

So it’s definitely worth checking how your mailbox is set up!

Hope that helps someone
