So today my macbook apple mail (Big Sur 11.6) refuses to take my gmail account online. Works fine with my other two email services (Proton and Godaddy), and my iPhone can check gmail...

I see some people that fixed this by removing and resetting up their gmail account, but am a bit nervous about losing some of my older emails...

Is there something I can check to determine what is hanging my client? Thanks in advance....

"Refuses?" And aren't the emails in the GMail account?

If you are concerned about losing emails, you should back them up.

"apple mail will not take gmail online?

Apple Mail does support taking gmail online.

Sigh, yes, I have been an Apple mail user for years. What I am reporting is that it is NOT taking my gmail account online... No action on my part will get my current apple mail client to go back online. Just started yesterday. So this is some kind of bug/problem.

Yes, the emails are in gmail. but no action I take will get my gmail account in apple mail (which I have had for years) to get into an online status.

Maybe PlayUltimate. Could use the browser interface, and my phone still got email.... Puzzling, but in my 34 years with IBM I found a regular thing with computer problems that resolved themselves. We coded those problems as TWA. Trouble Went Away. Often we were never able to actually identify the cause of the problem or the reason the problem stopped... Also considered computer internals as FM, F***ng Magic... Always interesting to see how present day still mirrors those early days of computing.

Intermittent errors/issues were always the bane of those that had to perform root cause analysis.

And now, this morning, back to normal... Sigh.
Weird stuff sometimes with gmail accounts in Mail. Mine goes offline multiple times a week but the dialog box to take all online works when there's no active windows on the desktop. The real annoyance is when it does this, Mail hijacks an open window and goes into a split-screen scenario. Closing then Mail from this requires it to be done exactly 3 times..till the next day or so.

I had such a problem in the last days, too. Gmail wanted the password again. But it wasn't possible to give Gmail the password in Mail. I had to delete the account and re-create it. The emails aren't deleted when the account is deleted. The new accounts then synched to the second computer which also had the same problem.
